High School Ice Hockey: Sunday, March 7, 2004 By Mike Costantino Washington Township defeated Shawnee 8-2 and won the JVA Championship in the SJHSIHL. Billy Choy led Township with two goals and two assists, Alex Bickle scored both goals for Shawnee. Unfortunately the game deteriorated in the final moments with both teams taking fighting majors and in a show of sportsmanship or lack there of, erupted in an all out brawl during the handshake after the game had ended. Most hockey fans enjoy a fast paced, good checking, clean hitting game and occasionally a jostle between the enforcer on each team, but that game is played at the pro level, not in high school, let alone at the JV level. |
High School Ice Hockey: Sunday, March 7, 2004 By Mike Costantino Kevin Walsh netted a hat trick and Corey Jackmuff added two goals to lead West Deptford over Rancocas Valley 6-2 and win the JVB Championship in the SJHSIHL. Walsh started things off ninety seconds into the game as he jumped on a loose puck in the slot. After Jackmuff blasted a slap shot from inside the blue line to put West Deptford ahead 2-0. Rancocas needed to respond and had an opportunity in the waning moments of the period with the man advantage. |
Soccer Spotlight: Sunday, March 7, 2004 By David Deal The Philadelphia KiXX (17-11) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-6 victory today over the San Diego Sockers (11-17) in front of 4,113 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum. KiXX midfielder Andy Guastaferro recorded the game-winning goal at 13:40 of the fourth quarter. Stuart Dobson (2-4) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, turning away 13 of the 19 shots he faced, while Riley Swift (0-2) took the loss between the posts for the Sockers with 13 saves on 20 chances. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 6, 2004 By Crystal Parker There are different methods a team uses to motivate themselves before a big game. This year’s group playoffs are no difference as the ultimate prize is a state championship. The Lady Tartans from Highland have been recognized as one of the best girl’s basketball teams in the state. So when Highland flexed their muscles against Manchester Township, they continued to totally crush their opponent the rest of the way. Maybe the results had nothing to do with their next opponent, the Lady Tigers from Woodrow Wilson, sitting in the stands after they had advanced with their win over Timber Creek earlier this afternoon. Or maybe, Highland’s 83-28 victory over Manchester Township was a sign of a team not letting anything stand in their way. Nevertheless, the finals between Highland and Woodrow Wilson will feature two teams with the talent and confidence to capture the crown. |
High School Ice Hockey: Saturday, March 6, 2004 By Mike Costantino There have been some great tandems over the years that have played high school ice hockey, and since the 1998-1999 season, our first covering ice hockey, we could not think of a better combination than Brandon Tunstall, Anthony Orner and Sean Sullivan. Some dynamic duos come to mind such as Pat Henderson and Sean Zahacewski from Cherokee, Chris Frynewicz and Greg Kuster from Moorestown, Chris Riggs and Jon Probe from Clearview and Mike Becker and Mike Cianfrani from Eastern, just to name a few. However, when you look at how a line plays together and the communication and knowing where your linemate will be and the amount of scoring chances they create, these three stands out from all the rest. We recently sat down and spent a few minutes right before their preparation for the championship game against Cherokee. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Saturday, March 6, 2004 By Al Cohen The Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League will be hosting Washington Township Night on Friday, March 26, when the team takes on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Wachovia Spectrum. For just $18, residents of Washington Township will receive a ticket to the game, one hot dog, popcorn and soda, as well as a Phantoms cap. |
Basketball Spotlight: Friday, March 5, 2004 By Bob Heller The USP men's basketball team took their first step towards a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship last night, downing Nyack College 72-55 in the quarterfinal round. The Devils placed four players in double figures, led by Chris Dougherty's (Jr., Haverford HS/Haverford, PA) 18 points. Gene Willard (Jr., Cardinal O'Hara HS/Broomall, PA) added 14 while William Kurtz (Fr., Shawnee HS/Shamong, NJ) and Jeff Miller (Sr., Interboro HS/Prospect Park, PA) chipped in 11 and 10 respectively. Miller also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and dished out a game-high seven assists. |
High School Ice Hockey: Thursday, March 4, 2004 By Mike Costantino The Eastern Vikings won their second consecutive SJHSIHL championship as they defeated Cherokee 4-0 before a standing room only crowd at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Dan Myers stopped all 25 shots, many from in close as he posted his second consecutive shutout in the playoffs. Once again, it was the line of Sean Sullivan, Anthony Orner and Brandon Tunstall that led the way for this senior-laden team as they accounted for all the goals. Cherokee coach Steve Rumbus in speaking prior to the game said, “One of the keys will be the first five minutes. We expect Eastern to try and jump right on us with their top line and if we can survive with the way we have been playing, it should be a good game”. Well in the games first minute Orner made a good play at the point to keep the puck in the zone and found Tunstall down low. Orner quickly hit Sullivan along the side of the net and he re-directed the pass into the net for a 1-0 lead. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, March 4, 2004 By Vincent Lewis The excitement of high school basketball is only the beginning for a true basketball fan as the NCAA is prepping for collegiate teams looking to make it to the final four. At Deptford High School, the final minutes of the game featured two teams making big plays down the strength to pull out the victory. The Spartans, hosting the 6th seeded Manchester Township, fought back to tie the game and had the ball in their possession with 37.1 seconds remaining in the game. But a missed shot and a touchdown pass for a last second basket by Jaron Griffin ended Deptford’s season as they fell 54-52. |

High School Ice Hockey: Wednesday, March 3, 2004 By Mike Costantino Louis Sarcone scored four goals to lead Cherokee over Rancocas Valley 10-5 and advance to the finals in the SJHSIHL Tournament against defending champion Eastern. Patrick McMahon and Kevin Magnin added two goals for Cherokee while Ryan Smith led the Rancocas attack netting a hat trick. Rancocas carried play for the first half of the opening stanza, and Cherokee did not register a shot until the midway point. That shot however turned out to be a goal as McMahon broke down the right side and ripped a shot by Kevin Kraft. Cherokee made it 2-0 as Dan Altieri dove to keep the puck in at the point and McMahon drove to the net after Kraft made the initial save. Altieri was right there to jam home the rebound. Smith cut the lead to 2-1 in the last minute of the period on a break. |
High School Basketball: Wednesday, March 3, 2004 By Jerome Michaels It didn’t take long before the first round of the boy’s basketball game between the 9th seeded Panthers from Camden traveling to Moorestown High School to take on the 8th seeded Quakers. Having the luxury of hosting this South Jersey Group 3 competition would be the only reason Moorestown would be able to enjoy. Too much of a surprise and with a lot of success, the Panthers patience on the court dominated the game. Camden’s success on the offensive boards allowed them several chances to put back those missed opportunities for points. Shomari Moore and Terron Murray coming off of the bench highlighted Camden’s first round win on the road. With their 82-53 victory, Camden will continue their quest to the finals by traveling to the number one seed Williamstown. |
Baseball Spotlight: Wednesday, March 3, 2004 By Maryann Gettis Veterans Stadium, Philadelphia's home for sports entertainment from 1971 through 2003, will be imploded at 7 a.m. on Sunday, March 21, the City of Philadelphia and the Phillies announced today. It will take approximately 58 seconds to implode the building. During the past few months, work has been underway with the conventional demolition of Veterans Stadium. Much has been removed from the Vet including concrete ramps, the podium level, lower seating bowl, lights, roofing and the Liberty Bell. By the time March 21 comes around, the Vet will have been reduced to a virtual concrete skeleton. |
High School Ice Hockey: Tuesday, March 2, 2004 By Mike Costantino Kevin Magnin scored two goals and Cherokee played a strong defensive game in front of Bobby Colasoro as they shut out Cherry Hill East 5-0 and advanced into the semi-final game against Rancocas Valley on Wednesday night at Voorhees. Most of the first period was spent feeling each other out; no one wanted to make that first mistake or turnover. Cherokee finally broke through in the last thirty-six seconds as Magnin broke in with Dan Shaw and Mike Garofolo, with only one man back for East. Garofolo hit Magnin down low and his back-hander found the net for a 1-0 lead. |
Basketball Spotlight: Tuesday, March 2, 2004 By Bob Heller After two close regular season wins against the New Jersey Institute of Technology women's basketball team (one and four points), the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team left no doubts that they were the better team as they rocked the Highlanders 92-52 to advance to the semi-finals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Friday. |
High School Basketball: Monday, March 1, 2004 By Crystal Parker Coming into a tournament with momentum always helps a team out by having that winning feeling and knowing what it takes to come away with the victory. The girl’s basketball team from Lenape has had the honor of watching and hearing all of the success the boy’s basketball team has been doing, as they are undefeated at the start of the post season. The Lady Indians have won 11 of their last 15 games before today’s matchup with the 8th seeded Lady Eagles from Winslow Township. Lenape, seeded 9th, broke open a competitive first half South Jersey Group 4 game by outscoring Township 18-7 during the third quarter. Freshman Sasha Simpson’s success inside and Courtney McNamara hustle helped Lenape keeping that winning feeling with their 50-37 win at Winslow Towship. |
High School Basketball: Monday, March 1, 2004 By Jerome Michaels It was the first day of the South Jersey group playoffs for both the girls and boys basketball team who had qualified for the single game elimination tournament. It was also the first game and last for the Braves from Absegami as they found out quickly how the boy’s basketball team from Cherry Hill East can put a game out of reach. The tandem of Christian Gibson and Brian Young began to connect from behind the three point arc that proved to be too much for the Braves to just settle for the conventional two point basket. The Cougars settling for the three ball, and making them, steadily increased their lead to advance to the next round against Egg Harbor Township. Cherry Hill East ended Absegami’s season with their 98-54 first round victory. |
College Baseball: Monday, March 1, 2004 By Mike Ballard Junior pitcher Nick Davidson turned in an outstanding outing in his first start of the year for the Rutgers-Camden baseball team, working eight shutout innings and allowing only three hits as the Scarlet Raptors won their home opener over Wesley College, 3-0, Feb. 28. Davidson walked three and struck out seven to post the Raptors’ first victory of the season. He allowed only one runner to third base all day long, coming in the first inning. |
