Coming into a tournament with momentum always helps a team out by having that winning feeling and knowing what it takes to come away with the victory. The girl’s basketball team from Lenape has had the honor of watching and hearing all of the success the boy’s basketball team has been doing, as they are undefeated at the start of the post season. The Lady Indians have won 11 of their last 15 games before today’s matchup with the 8th seeded Lady Eagles from Winslow Township. Lenape, seeded 9th, broke open a competitive first half South Jersey Group 4 game by outscoring Township 18-7 during the third quarter. Freshman Sasha Simpson’s success inside and Courtney McNamara hustle helped Lenape keeping that winning feeling with their 50-37 win at Winslow Towship.
During the first half of this game, the two teams combined for six lead changes and five ties with the largest lead were only four points. That four point margin was at the start of the game as Lenape jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 4:52 showing on the first quarter clock. Senior Maurisa Williams did her best established her ground inside the paint as her offensive put backs gave Winslow Township a brief but slim 7-6 lead. The seesaw battle continued with Lenape holding a 22-21 lead at the end of the half.
Guard Nikki Bodrog did an excellent job engineering the Indians past Township’s aggressive full court pressure through out the game. Winslow Township would chip away at their double-digit deficit, but Lenape would respond late in the game to seal the victory. Sasha Simpson finished with a game high 18 points and Courtney McNamara added 14 points for Lenape. Maurisas Williams led Winslow Township with 15 points and 10 points from Tajira Martin.
