High School Football: Saturday, November 22, 2003 By Vincent Lewis Glassboro did their homework preparing for their semi-final football battle against the Thundering Herd from Woodbury High School. Score as many points possible and hope it would be enough to advance to the South Jersey Group I finals. That theory lasted for one half of this game as the Bulldogs early lead quickly dissipated in the second half. Woodbury’s defense kept the pressure on Glassboro and gave their offense excellent field position for runningback Chris Pressley to score three consecutive touchdowns. Woodbury recorded the 27-14 victory and will now travel to take on Schalick for the title. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 22, 2003 By Jerome Michaels During the pre-game warm-ups, you couldn’t miss seeing the Spartans joining in with the Toms River South marching band’s fight theme. Deptford was confident and they would back it up on the field during their semi-final match-up with the fourth seeded Indians. Twenty-one first half points were more than enough points to advance to the finals since 1998. Keeping their perfect 10-0 record in tact, Deptford’s defense highlighted their 35-6 victory to earn a berth in the South Jersey Group III title game against Hammonton. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Saturday, November 22, 2003 By Al Cohen The Philadelphia Phantoms fought back from a three-goal first-period deficit tonight to beat inter-state rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, 5-4, at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza. Mark Murphy had two goals and Neil Little stopped 24-of-25 shots after replacing Antero Niittymaki early in the first period. Peter White and Kirk Furey each added two assists and Kirby Law registered the game-winner at 7:14 of the final period for the Phantoms, who won their third straight game. Kris Beech and Matt Murley both had three-point nights for the Penguins and Jean-Sebastian Aubin stopped 23 shots as Wilkes-Barre suffered its fifth loss in a row. |
High School Football: Friday, November 21, 2003 By Jerome Michaels There are some who would rather watch a college football game because of the excitement generated by an offense's ability to put a ton of points on the scoreboard. The National Football League can be a bit too slow at times where Saturday afternoon you could find fans glued to the television watching their favorite collegiate team. Friday night at Cherokee High School in front of a packed stadium, the Chiefs and the Vikings from Eastern put on one of the most exciting football games ever played in this area. With the game tied twice with just less than four minutes remaining in regulation, it took two overtime periods to decide this South Jersey Group IV semifinals matchup. Eastern’s Anthony Orio not only scored the winning touchdown in their 50-43 decision, he also came up with the game winning interception to seal the Vikings victory. |
High School Football: Friday, November 21, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The South Jersey Group IV football bracket has not gone the way that most would have guessed. With the top four seeds knocked out of the playoffs, the lower seeds rule on this day as the sixth seeded Minutemen from Washington Township were hosting the Braves from Absegami. Both of these teams were responsible for ending Shawnee and Toms River East quest for the title and were looking to send one more team home. Jesse Cooper had a lot to do with Township’s 49-7 victory to advance to the finals and play the winner of the Eastern-Cherokee game. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, November 21, 2003 By Mike Costantino Eight different players scored for Township as they skated past Williamstown 9-1. Nino Cammaratta paced the Township attack with two goals, Jack McDonough scored the lone Williamstown goal. Township started out quickly as they launched sixteen shots in the first period, but Joshua Haines stopped them all and Williamstown actually led 1-0 heading into the second period. After Sean Rainey tied the game at 1-1, Township scored four goals in a span of five minutes to brake open a close game. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, November 21, 2003 By Mike Costantino Clearview scored three goals in the second period, breaking a 1-1 tie as they defeated St. Joe’s 5-3 in Tier 1 action on Friday night. Jim Sprinkle, Wyatt Fox and Steve Short had a goal and an assist each. Sprinkle scored the only goal of the first period on a feed from Fox, splitting the defense. After Rich Hohenberger tied the game at 1-1 scoring short-handed, on the same penalty, Clearview re-took the lead. Mike Wolk scored from the slot as he swatted at the puck after falling to his knees. Goals by Short and Fox seem to put Clearview in command with a 4-1 lead after two periods. |

Ice Hockey Spotlight: Wednesday, November 19, 2003 By Al Cohen The Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League today recalled defenseman James Laux (Cherry Hill, N.J.) from the Trenton Titans of the ECHL. Laux, a rookie who played the last two years at Colorado College, was signed as a free agent on May 19 and attended training camp with the Phantoms before getting assigned to Trenton on Oct. 6. He was scoreless in four games with the Titans, while also spending time on the injured list. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 17, 2003 By Mike Costantino Sean Sullivan had three goals and three assists, and Brandon Tunstall added two goals and three assists as Eastern rolled over Clearview 8-2 at the Skate Zone. Coming off a win over previously undefeated Rancocas Valley, Clearview was looking to spoil Eastern’s winning streak, but the Vikings had other ideas. The line of Sullivan, Tunstall and Anthony Orner, who chipped in with four assists, were dominant all night, and set the tone as Sullivan scored his three goals in the first period. Dan Tavana added two goals and Chris Lieg also scored for the Vikings as they continue to get contributions from all three lines. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 17, 2003 By Mike Costantino Cherokee scored four goals in the third period and defeated Washington Township 6-4 in Tier 1 action played in Voorhees. After a scoreless first period, Township scored three goals in a seven- minute span, two by Billy Choy and one by Jason Pelle to lead 3-0. But Cherokee scored two goals thirty seconds apart in the final three minutes of the period to cut the lead to 3-2 and carry the momentum heading into the third period. Louis Sarcone and Patrick McMahon scored goals ninety-seconds apart in the first five minutes to put Cherokee up 4-3. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 17, 2003 By Mike Costantino Rich Ferro broke a 3-3 tie scoring a power play goal in the third period as Paul VI rallied for a 5-3 victory over Moorestown. The improbable win came after Paul VI tied a league record in the first period by registering zero shots on goal. Eric Lake continued his solid play in nets, particularly in the first period as Moorestown launched 23 shots on net but only managed two goals, one by Danny Wallace and the other by Colin Corley. Part of the problem was Paul VI spent more time killing penalties in the first period, eight, including two occasions where they were down two men. However, Lake made several key saves from in close until his teammates realized they were still in the game despite their lack of offense. |
