Event Spotlight: Sunday, January 12, 2003 By Patrick Williams PHILADELPHIA - Bottom line, the Norfolk Admirals are a very safe bet when holding a lead going into the third period. Norfolk (24-13-2-3, 53 points) illustrated that point to the Phantoms last night at the First Union Spectrum in a 1-0 win over the hosts. Igor Radulov's second-period goal was enough offense for the Admirals. Veteran goaltender Steve Passmore's 15-save night anchored the Norfolk defense. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, January 11, 2003 By Jerome Michaels It has been a well-deserved change for the boy's basketball team from Lenape High School. Last year, the Indians were always chasing the divisional leaders. It's a different story now as they are the team to beat winning their seventh straight game against Camden by a score of 68-49. The Indian's good start involved divisional wins over Shawnee, Cherokee, Eastern and today the Panthers from the National Division. Jason Thompson led Lenape with a team high 17 points. |

The Renegades did not roll over during this match as they rebounded from a 10-point deficit to jump ahead when Justin Galati recorded a pin during the 171-pound match. Township would regain the lead and then put the match away when the Minutemen received pins in the last 5 out of 6 matches by Bob Cowden, Chris Niszczak, Ryan Walsh, Dave Tomasette and Steve Buckley. |

High School Ice Hockey: Friday, January 10, 2003 By Mike Costantino Six different players scored goals as the Cinnaminson Pirates defeated the Minutemen of Washington Township 7-3 in Tier 2 action at Hollydell. Trailing 3-2 late in the second period, Cinnaminson tied the game on a goal by Anthony Mottola after Bryan Crosby fed a pass from the corner to Mottola who was stationed along the side of the net. Moments later with the period winding down and Township caught in a line change, Crosby broke in all alone and his quick shot found the net to give Cinnaminson the lead for good at 4-3. |

High School Basketball: Thursday, January 9, 2003 By Jerome Michaels When two teams are looking for ways to rebound from a slow start, it's always good to play a similar team in a similar situation. Willingboro and Cinnaminson are both fighting to get to five hundred-percentage basketball in their divisions. Willingboro was looking to win its second straight game against the host Pirates from Cinnaminson. The Chimeras had little problems from start to end to post a 61-48 Burlington County Conference boy's basketball game. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 9, 2003 By Anton Figg Timber Creek has a basketball team that seems to have all the pieces in place to make life miserable for lots of teams in South Jersey. Their combination of size and speed, and the way they play the game is enjoyable to watch. Playing against a Pennsauken team that was as quick as they were, seemed not to pose a problem, they just went over the top and when they did the Indians had few people who could contest them. Pennsauken's shooting over a 1-3-1 zone watched as most of the shots turned into rebounds, the shots that came from the guards penetrating were blocked. |
Event Spotlight: Thursday, January 9, 2003 By Patrick Williams PHILADELPHIA - Sometimes you do get something for nothing. Last night at the First Union Spectrum, the Phantoms picked up a point in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The point was handed to the Phantoms, who managed to take the game into overtime despite being outplayed in every facet of the game against a Bridgeport team with only 15 skaters. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 9, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was a battle between two of the top teams from the Olympic Conference, each winning all of their games so far this season. Camden Catholic was hosting the Lady Tigers from Woodrow Wilson that neither team wanted to lose. This game came down to Woodrow Wilson coming up with several key defensive plays late in the game. Shalamar Oakley's basket finally put Wilson ahead for good with just over two minutes remaining. Aggressive defense with the lead was enough to give Woodrow Wilson (6-0) a 49-43 victory and hand Camden Catholic their first loss of the season. |
Event Spotlight: Tuesday, January 7, 2003 By David W. Unkle After a successful West Coast road trip, the Flyers returned home tonight to take on the hockey's version of the Cincinnati Bengals. Once again played down to the level of their opponent and the Philly fans let them know it at the end of the first period. Tonight's 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres (10-23-5-2, 27 points) was anything but textbook hockey but for the Flyers (21-10-8-1, 51 points), it still keeps them atop the Atlantic Division. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, January 7, 2003 By Jerome Michaels McCorristin boy's basketball program has been successful so far this season entering the Burlington County League Freedom Division. Known as the Iron Mikes, McCorristin has been getting noticed by winning their first 4 games with Florence standing in the way of making it five straight. Florence, also undefeated, had the home court advantage but not the momentum. The Iron Mikes behind a balanced scoring attack posted a 60-56 road victory. |

But Kevin Desrochers' power play goal tied the score at 1-1 when he came over the blue line and blasted a shot that found the back of the net. Less than one-minute later, Brian Buck put home a rebound after Stomel was stopped to put Cherry Hill up 2-1 heading into the second period. |
Event Spotlight: Monday, January 6, 2003 By Patrick Williams PHILADELPHIA - This weekend, the Phantoms proved they can win with offense or they can win with reliable goaltending and strong work on special teams. The win was the Phantoms' fourth in a row on home ice. The shutout was Little's second of the season, his previous shutout coming on October 12 at home against Rochester.
