South Jersey Soccer: Saturday, June 19, 1999

The South Jersey Barons took back first place Saturday night as they beat the Westchester (NY) Flames 2-1 at Carey Stadium in Ocean City. The Barons were favored to win this one and for a while it looked like they thought they should get the win without playing the game. Eleven minutes into the first half Majik Agu made a perfect centering pass that Michael Hayes headed perfectly into the top of the net past Flames keeper David Popek. The Barons immediately dropped into a lazy kind of play that took the ball down into their defensive end.

Waterford Twp. won the first of this best-of-three SJGSA playoff series Friday night in Waterford by a score of 6-2. But due to circumstances, Berlin Boro came in to game 2 at a disadvantage, missing three key players who were in California as a result of their class at the Berlin Community School winning NASA's Space Settlement Contest. So the Berlin girls were only able to field a team of eight this day at Ted Moos Memorial Field. But as they say, adversity builds character, and brings out the best even in difficult situations.

This particular award is in recognition of those who have excelled in strength and conditioning along with community involvement, academic achievement and leadership qualities.

Tuesday night, MBCS won the Palmyra-Riverton Continental League Championship, defeating Villari's Milmarian 9 - 8. MBCS swept the series 2 - 0.
