High School Ice Hockey: Sunday, October 18, 1998
By Rick Murro
On Sunday night, the Washington Township JV League team played its first league game against a powerful and tenacious Eastern Club. This game had all the makings of a great contest and neither team would disappoint their fans. In a penalty-filled up and down game, skating and hard hitting was the key for both clubs.

Both the Deptford Spartans and the Salem Rams were looking to gain ground in the playoff race, but it was Deptford who would run away with the victory with the help of Justin Love's two touchdowns. Turnovers would also be key in this Tri-County Conference non-division game.

If you thought that the opening play of the Camden Catholic at Bishop Eustace football game was an indication of a high scoring game, then your guess would be right. Both teams were able to score at will and defense was not much of a factor. Camden Catholic's J.P. Hammond took the opening kickoff 88 yards for the early lead. Bishop Eustace then countered with an early touchdown of their own, but it was the Irish who got the final score with just under a minute left in the game. Camden Catholic would get their first victory of the season by defeating the Crusaders 42-38.

BTAA boys Coach Bill Conn had his players ready to play. His team started off the game very strong. Bill Conn, Jr. started the game off with a great turn around shot from 18 yards out. This gave the BTAA a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Nick DiGrosso scored to make it 2-0. BTAA had a goal taken away by an offside call by the ref. This let the TBAA back into the game. TBAA scored to make it 2-1 at the half.

You can always count on a exciting game when the Gloucester High Lions play the Gloucester Catholic Rams. Even though the Rams were 1-3 and the Lions were 4-0, somehow you knew the Rams would play them tough. With the help of wide receiver Jason McDonnell and the big play, the Lions were able to survive a tough one, 13-9.

On October 15, the Edgewood boy's soccer team lost at Triton 3-1. The Edgewood Eagles dominated the first half, but the score at the end of the half was 1-1. Scott Hart scored the Triton goal with an assist to TJ Durham. Brandon Cohen scored Edgewood's goal with an assist to Chris Blackmore. Some of the fans (fans will be fans) said that the second goal for Triton was questionable. Nick Satieti, with a volley, scored the goal, assisted by Mario Sergi. After that goal, Edgewood's coach Ron Wence said that the team could not regroup and had trouble defending without Mike Muckley (sitting out for a red card against Highland).

Just when the game started, Meridith Sobel took control of the ball and passed it to Christy Madden. Madden then made a beautiful shot into the net. Shawnee's keeper never had a chance. This all happened with 1:32 seconds into the first half. Although the Renegades would put up tremendous pressure for the rest of the game the only other goal was on a direct kick from Jen Padlo.

As I read article after article on strength and conditioning for high school student-athletes, I see an alarming trend. Flexibility is not being stressed like I would hope. If utilized properly, "flex time" could be quite beneficial to the overall practice.
