In front of 5,374 fans at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA, the Philadelphia Barrage crushed the Denver Outlaws 23-12 in the MLL Championship Game. Roy Colsey was named Bud Light game MVP for his 10-point (6G, 2 2ptG, 2A) performance in the game. The Barrage was crowned the 2006 MLL Champions. Philadelphia started off the scoring at 12:29 with a goal from rookie midfielder Matt Zash, followed by another goal by Bobby Horsey. Denver answered back going on a three-goal run giving them a one-goal lead. Mike Law scored two of those three goals, along with a goal from Brian Langtry. The Barrage regained the lead with goals scored by B.J. Prager, Justin Smith, Roy Colsey and a two-point goal from Matt Striebel, his first of the season. Denver rookie midfielder Casey Cittadino scored with 0:08 seconds left on the clock to end the quarter.

With a playoff spot tightly secured, the Philadelphia Barrage prepare for their final game against the Baltimore Bayhawks. When these two teams met at Villanova Stadium on July 27, it was an interesting event with a long lightning delay, followed by another lightning delay with three minutes left in the first quarter, following by another delay, ending the game three minutes early. Despite the constant delays the Barrage managed to top the Bayhawks 22-11. This second match-up is important for the Barrage; they need a win to be dubbed the Eastern Division Champions.

Every season is a memorable one, but it's much sweeter when a team claims the division title, the group title and also the state championship...for the seventh time! Moorestown's girls' lacrosse team completely dominated the tournament of champions by outscoring their opponent 107-21 and capturing their seventh straight New Jersey State Title by completely dominating the Blue Devils from Shore Regional. The senior led team won just about every aspect of the game and rolled onto their 20-4 victory. Brooke Cantwell continued to show off her ability to come up with different ways of scoring finished the game with seven goals and four assists. Gulia Giordano and Lauren McAfee also put the ball into the net several times as a total of nine different Lady Quakers scored goals for Moorestown.

It was a match up between two good girl's lacrosse teams that have demonstrated their abilities at scoring goals at will. Good speed, nice passing and individual effort could be found on the lacrosse field at Shawnee High School. The second seeded Lady Renegades were hosting Washington Township who were positioned in the third seed of the South Jersey Group A girls' semifinals. This game was a bit different than the rest as goalie Allie Shropshire for Shawnee was able to stop all but three shots that headed her way. The Renegades, behind Becca Perkins seven goal performance built a lead that put this game away early. With Shawnee's 12-3 victory, they will now travel to Moorestown to take on the number one seeded Quakers.

It's no secret that if you want to be the best, you must at least compete against the Lady Quakers from Moorestown. With so many players on the team that have the ability to score from anywhere on the field, a team must be able to match Moorestown's talent both offensively and defensively. The fifth seeded Lady Cougars from Cherry Hill East had just won a thrilling come from behind victory and were looking to continue that momentum against the top seed in the South Jersey Group A girls' lacrosse bracket. On this day, twelve different players for Moorestown would score at least a goal and the Quakers would advance to the finals with their 20-1 victory. Moorestown will now host the second seeded Lady Renegades from Shawnee for the title.

It's that scenario that's played out in an athlete's mind about scoring that last second shot to win a game. That particular scene was set in the opening round of the South Jersey Group B girl's lacrosse game played at Lenape. Fifth seeded Cherry Hill East was trailing the fourth seeded Lady Indians by a single goal with less than thirty seconds remaining in regulation. Kelly Dallas came through with the game tying goal for the Lady Cougars and this game appeared to be headed for overtime. But that's when Diana Shalkowski received the ball off of the draw and rushed down field and deposited the game winning goal. Cherry Hill East would advance to the next round with their 10-9 victory over Lenape.

What do you expect? You are supposed to get what you wish for on your birthday, right? Senior Sean DeLaney could hear over the public announcer system that the "birthday boy" just scored another goal for Moorestown in the opening round of the boys' lacrosse Group 2 tournament. Added to his list of presents would be the celebration of scoring eight goals helping the Quakers pick up the 17-8 win over the visiting Patriots from Wayne Hills. That last goal for DeLaney would give him his one hundredth point. The third seeded Quakers will now wait for the winner of the Crawford versus West Morris Central game to see which team they will host in the next round.

With their fourth consecutive Burlington County League title already in their possession, the Lady Quakers from Moorestown were at it again taking on another opponent from the South Jersey area. Not taking any team lightly, the Quakers went out on their field ready to take on the Bears from Delran. Too many times it has been witnessed the favor in a game has come away with a loss. The Bears has several players such as Lindsay Davenport, Kelly Caracci and Kate Simmons who have demonstrated their ability of scoring goals. But on this day, Moorestown completely dominated the game from start to finish. The Quakers collectively defeated Delran in a game were fifteen different players scored at least a goal. The Quakers would post their fifth win in a row with their 20-2 victory.

The girls' lacrosse game between the Lady Renegades from Shawnee traveling to Eastern had several highlights to it even before the game started. One important factor for the Vikings was that they had to win this game against one of the top team in New Jersey in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. Eastern would pull within a single goal early in this game when Meghan Bain scored her 100th goal of her career at Eastern. But after that milestone goal, it would be all Shawnee for the remainder of this Olympic Conference game. Becca Perkins scored six times helping the Renegades post an 18-4 victory over the Lady Vikings.

Three teams were competing for the division as the regular season comes down to an end this weekend. With only a handful of games remaining, every win no matter who the opponent may be, is a must win. The Lady Panthers from Collingswood would be looking for a win at Camden Catholic and to end the Irish's eleven game unbeaten streak. Those two teams along with Seneca needed to win every game in order to claim the Olympic Conference National Division title. Camden Catholic would rally late in the game to pull within a single goal, but the Panthers' key possession off of a draw allowed Collingswood to pick up the 12-11 victory and hand the Irish their first loss of the season.

Sure there's always that one player, Tom Verchio, who can completely take a game over by themselves. Defenses try their best to contain that player, Tom Verchio, but even the best teams can only limit the clear path shot attempts by that player. When Washington Township traveled to Cherry Hill East, Tom Verchio took only what the Cougars' defense gave him but still was able to score. The Minutemen were able to capitalize on their team speed setting up good shots and finally broke this game open during the second half. Washington Township would defeat Cherry Hill East 15-2 in an Olympic Conference boys' lacrosse game.

West Deptford was very impressive with their defense during the early moments of their game against the Lady Panthers from Collingswood. Rachel Mehaffey helped the Eagles jump out to an early two goal lead and knew that the entire team would have to continue to play at a high level against a very successful Lady Panthers team. Collingswood, after coming up short scoring a goal on their first five shot attempts, continued to apply pressure on West Deptford's defense and was rewarded by scoring eight straight goals and pull away from a determined Eagles team. Collingswood would pick up their tenth win in a row with their 18-7 victory.

It was suppose to be one of their toughest games of the season, but all of the indications on the field showed that the Lady Quakers from Moorestown were clearly the better team. The Lady Gators from Seton Keough, located in Maryland, were nationally ranked as the twenty-fifth team found themselves faced with a relentless and defensive minded Quakers team. Seton Keough had won three of their last four games and was looking to pick up their third win in a row. Moorestown's first goal of the just about a minute into this game was the first of seven goals scored during the first half. It would be the first of six goals that Brooke Cantwell would score helping Moorestown improve their record to 10-0 on the season with their 16-2 victory.

The Olympic Conference American Division has teams that have demonstrated their ability of scoring goals. Three of those teams have been considered as top ranking girls' lacrosse teams in our area while Cherokee and Cherry Hill East were not that far behind. Each and every team from that division could qualify for the post season, but they will have to prove it on the field down the stretch. Both of these teams were in search of their first division win. Proving that they can maintain possession of the ball, the Lady Cougars would be able to hold off Cherokee during the second half. Sam Stern would score six times helping Cherry Hill East to pick up the 12-6 victory.

It was a match-up that both teams had something to prove. The boys' lacrosse team from Shawnee knew that if they were going to win at Eastern High School and take on the undefeated Vikings, they would have to play smart. Eastern has demonstrated their ability in playing solid defense and counter that with a potent offense is the reason they have won eight games in a row. The Renegades would overcome a two goal halftime deficit by scoring eight unanswered goals during the second half to completely dominate this Olympic Conference competition. Mike Gersie and Mike Burns would lead the Renegades in scoring and Shawnee would post the 11-6 decision over Eastern.

No lead was safe and both teams had players with the ability of creating ways of scoring. That's the way this boys' lacrosse game could be described between Winslow Township traveling to Washington Township participating in an inter Olympic Conference game. The Minutemen would maintain a slight edge over visiting Winslow Township during the first half, but the momentum slightly again would switch over to the side of the Eagles. This game eventually would have to be decided in overtime where Winslow Township would pick up the 12-11 victory. Keenan Andersen netted seven goals and had five assists in this game for the Eagles.

It's never any fun losing a game to any opponent. The coaching staff as well as other players will sometime ease that bad feeling by pointing out all of the good things that happened during a game. Playing hard, playing smart and not giving up could be found on the field could be found when the Lady Vikings from Eastern hosted Kingsway. For Eastern, they had loss a close one goal game yesterday to Washington Township. Eastern would score fourteen first half goals and cruise to a 20-4 win over Kingsway in a non-league girls' lacrosse competition.

Two teams from different divisions were looking to pick an all important win. So far this season, the Patriot division has several teams all within a win or two of becoming the top team. The Lions from Cherry Hill West is in the thick of things and they were looking to pick up some momentum at home against the Indians from Lenape. Both of these teams are chasing division leaders who have demonstrated the ability to score plenty of goals, but this game would decided by Lenape during the second quarter. Scott Calmey would score two of his three goals before the half helping Lenape shutout Cherry Hill West by a 4-0 score.

The Philadelphia Wings had their playoff hopes all but dashed with an 8-7 loss to the Buffalo Bandits at HSBC Arena. In order to make the playoffs, the Wings must win their final regular season game against the Bandits tomorrow night at the Wachovia Center at 8 p.m. In addition, the Toronto Rock will have to defeat the Rochester Knighthawks and the Minnesota Swarm must defeat the Portland LumberJax in order for the Wings to qualify for post-season play.

Just two days ago, St. Augustine Prep boys' lacrosse team celebrated picking up their first win of the season by defeating Winslow Township. That momentum would carry over against their game at West Deptford where the Hermits would hold a 2-1 lead at halftime against the undefeated Eagles. Austin Tracey and Max Voumard scored back to back goals before halftime for St. Augustine. But the second half would be a different out for West Deptford as they received three goals from Matt Nicolosi and three goals from Steve Helmuth and outscore their opponent 10-1. The final score was 11-3 and West Deptford would keep their unbeaten record and win their fifth game in a row.

When you take a look at the statistics, the match up between the Golden Eagles from Seneca and the Lancers from Holy Cross, it appeared that this would be a competitive game. The team limiting their turnovers and executing well would pick up the well deserved win. When Mike Schiraldi scored the first goal of the game for Seneca, Holy Cross would respond with a goal scored by Joe Wagner. That's the way this Olympic Conference boys' lacrosse game went through four quarters. But on this day, the Golden Eagles' hard work especially during the second half allowed them to outscore the Lancers by three goals. Seneca's Kirk Kaiser would score three goals during that important second half and help the Golden Eagles pick up the 10-8 victory.

The Philadelphia Wings will have to wait until the final weekend of the regular season to determine their playoff fate after a 15-14 overtime loss to the Toronto Rock in front of 18,400 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, ON. The Wings have two remaining regular season games against the Buffalo Bandits on Friday, April 14 at HSBC Arena and their final regular season home game on Saturday, April 15 at the Wachovia Center.

With the start of a new season, the Cherokee Chiefs boys' lacrosse team would be looking to improve on advancing further into the post season tournament and that would include defeating the Renegades from Shawnee. For several years, Shawnee has not only defeated the Chiefs in every game but they have also dominated the sport. Well, with the new season upon us, new beginnings can occur and the Chiefs finally were able to defeat Shawnee earlier in the week. So that was not good news for the Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic who traveled to Cherokee looking to pick up their second win. Matt Dunn was able to muscle his way past the defense and score a total of five goals helping the Chiefs pick up the 15-2 victory.

A few weeks ago you could find players outdoor taking part of practices in anticipation of making the team. One of those sports would be the growing popularity of lacrosse. With more and more high schools establishing lacrosse teams in South Jersey, it can only benefit from the attention it’s getting. For Camden Catholic and Cherry Hill West who were starting off the season participating in an inter conference girls’ lacrosse team, it would be a chance for these two established squads to begin their season with victory. Midfielder Jessica Falcone would start the season off right by scoring five goals for Camden Catholic and the Lady Irish would pick up the 18-8 win at home against Cherry Hill West.

There's just over a month away before teams start worrying about the May 15th deadline to qualifying for the state tournament. With the start of a new season, it's always nice to pick up that first victory of the season especially on the first day. It puts a team one step closer in achieving that goal of extending the regular season. With new students making the team, this season will be interesting to watch. The Wings couldn't hold up to Arizona's pressure in a 13-12 loss Saturday at the Wachovia Center in front of 11,693 fans. Philadelphia led after one quarter, but Arizona adjusted to handle the Wings' offense and held the lead for most of the remainder of the game. Craig Conn led the Sting with three goals and Dan Dawson added a goal and six assists. Dan Marohl led the Wings with two goals and two assists.

The Wings made up for a disappointing loss in the first of the home-and-away series against first-place Rochester with a 16-12 win in game two Saturday at the Wachovia Center. Newly acquired Mike Regan made an impact in his first game with Philadelphia, scoring three goals and two assists. Rookie Sean Greenhalgh led the Wings' scoring with three goals and three assists. The Wings see their next game action in two weeks when they face the Western Division leading Arizona Sting on Saturday, March 25 at 1:30 p.m. at Wachovia Center.

An explosive Rochester Knighthawks offense led by Shawn Williams ten point performance (5G, 5A) defeated the Philadelphia Wings by a score of 17-8 at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY. The Wings (5-5) face the Knighthawks (7-3) again tomorrow at Wachovia Center at 8 p.m. "We really struggled offensively tonight and just looked sluggish overall," said Wings' General Manager and Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson. "We were hoping to take this game tonight to take the pressure off of tomorrow a bit. Tomorrow night's game is absolutely crucial for us."

The Wings woke up after a slow first half to defeat the Rock, 14-12, Saturday at the Wachovia Center. The win comes after a tough overtime loss to Toronto last weekend. Philadelphia took the lead for the first time late in the third quarter and held on for the win. Jeff Ratcliffe led the team with four goals and an assist, while Dan Marohl added three goals and two assists. "I think they just realized that if we're going to play in this league, we have to get back to what we're doing right ," said Wings' coach Lindsay Sanderson. "They weren't satisfied with the way they looked in the first half. It's nice to see them come back as a unit. The results speak for themselves."

The National Lacrosse League announced today that Wings forwards Jake Bergey and Dan Marohl along with defenseman Glenn Clark were chosen as reserves for the 2006 East Division All-Star Team. They will join Wings captain Thomas Hajek, who was chosen yesterday as part of the starting lineup, and Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson, who will be the Assistant Coach for the East Division Team. The 2006 NLL All-Star Game will be played at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Saturday, February 25th at 4 p.m. and will air locally on Comcast SportsNet at 11:00 p.m.

The Philadelphia Wings (2-0) remain undefeated as they defeated the Minnesota Swarm by a score of 15-11at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. Nine-year veteran Jake Bergey powered the Wings with three goals on the night, while rookies Sean Greenhalgh, Chad Thompson, and Luke Wiles continued to be a factor contributing five overall goals. The Wings will face the Swarm again next Saturday, January 14 in their home opener at Wachovia Center at 8 p.m.
