 High School Lacrosse:Lenape Continues to Come up Big Monday, May 14, 2007

When two teams with winning records meet on the field, it's hard not to judge the other team to see how good they really are. You can say that about both the Indians from Lenape and the Pioneers from Clearview. Both have winning programs and have demonstrated that they could come away with a victory if they play at the top of their game. Clearview would jump out to a one goal lead, but the Indians would respond and flipped their deficit to a two goal lead at the break. Both teams would tighten up their defenses during the second half and Lenape would come through with a three goal performance by Scott Kalmey. Lenape would hold off the Pioneers and secure a 7-5 victory.

So far this season, the competition has gotten a lot better when it comes to the arrival of boys' lacrosse. Each year, more schools are adding lacrosse to their athletic program and each year the teams are getting better. When the Minutemen from Washington Township traveled to Lenape to take on the surging Indians, Township had an opportunity to pick up a very important division win. Lenape would find themselves trailing early but bounced back when Zach Simons scored two first half goals to rally the Indians. Lenape would improve their record to 8-3 with their 7-4 win over the Minutemen.

Even before the teams stepped out onto the court, you could see the flowers and balloons for the anticipated celebration for Cherokee's Laura Sweeney 1000th point being scored. Sweeney would reach that milestone on her third basket of the game. When the host Lady Indians from Lenape watched that celebration lead to the Chiefs taking a double digit lead into the second quarter, Lenape's defense aggressively began to pressure their opponent and reduced their deficit to four points at halftime. The game would come down to the Lady Indians aggressive play on the boards and two clutch free throws down to stretch. Lenape would extend their winning streak to four games with their 53-50 win over a very tough Cherokee squad. |

After each game is played, the coaching staff is responsible for reviewing the good and the bad plays in order to improve on areas that need to be addressed. The Indians from Pennsauken would get their chance against Lenape in order to continue to keep their undefeated record in tact. The coaching staff of Pennsauken would be proud as their running and passing game was able to produce points on the scoreboard. Wendell Johnson scored two rushing touchdowns and quarterback Keith Jones threw for two scores and Pennsauken would pick up their third win in a row with their 33-7 victory Friday night at Lenape. |

Seneca played Lenape only twice in their brief history and both teams each won a game. To start the new season off, both of these teams would get a chance to break that tie as the Golden Eagles were looking to pick up a road victory. After a scoreless opening quarter, Seneca would score the game's first touchdown. Lenape did respond with an electrified kickoff return that gave hometown fans something to cheer about. But that's when the Golden Eagles twenty-six unanswered points through the fourth quarter to defeat the Indians 33-14. Six different players were responsible in scoring touchdowns for Seneca. |

It's that scenario that's played out in an athlete's mind about scoring that last second shot to win a game. That particular scene was set in the opening round of the South Jersey Group B girl's lacrosse game played at Lenape. Fifth seeded Cherry Hill East was trailing the fourth seeded Lady Indians by a single goal with less than thirty seconds remaining in regulation. Kelly Dallas came through with the game tying goal for the Lady Cougars and this game appeared to be headed for overtime. But that's when Diana Shalkowski received the ball off of the draw and rushed down field and deposited the game winning goal. Cherry Hill East would advance to the next round with their 10-9 victory over Lenape. |

Two teams from different divisions were looking to pick an all important win. So far this season, the Patriot division has several teams all within a win or two of becoming the top team. The Lions from Cherry Hill West is in the thick of things and they were looking to pick up some momentum at home against the Indians from Lenape. Both of these teams are chasing division leaders who have demonstrated the ability to score plenty of goals, but this game would decided by Lenape during the second quarter. Scott Calmey would score two of his three goals before the half helping Lenape shutout Cherry Hill West by a 4-0 score. |

It's not easy to win back to back titles and the Vikings from Atlantic City were looking to defeat the Lenape Indians for the South Jersey Group 4 championship. Both teams had worked their way through the bracket that included the Indians knocking off second seeded Shawnee to advance to the finals. The top seeded Vikings would start this game out running and they didn't stop until the final buzzer was sounded. The results for their efforts would be a 58-50 decision over Lenape allowing Atlantic City to repeat has champs. |

It was a playoff game atmosphere before the upcoming state basketball tournament even began. Lenape, already with the Olympic Conference American Division title in hand, traveled to Cherokee in a battle between the two teams leading their division. Both of these teams have secured a position in the state tournament, but this game was about bragging rights. With a pack gymnasium and the Chiefs leading by double digits, the Lenape fans would watch the Indians pull with a point late in the quarter. Cherokee would then end their scoring drought and hold off Lenape and post a 52-49 win. |

There has to be a lot said about a team that has not won a single game during the regular season and has loss their starting goalie. So when the Braves from Williamstown took the ice against Lenape in a Tier I first round playoff game, on paper it appeared that this game would be an easy win for Williamstown. And it would start out that way when twenty seconds into the game, Thomas Ruiz's difficult angle goal from behind the net gave Williamstown the lead. Another goal during the second period pushed that lead even further. During this entire game, the Braves attempted shot after shot after shot that John Hood put himself in front of. But the two goals that got pass were more than enough for Williamstown to advance to the next round. |

There’s so much at stake no matter who your opponent is when the regular season schedule plays out its final games. No opponent should be taken lightly especially when a division title is on the line. Today’s game against the Lenape Indians was a game Seneca needed to win, not just for the standings but for a chance to host a first round playoff game. The Golden Eagles were in a tie with Triton in the Burlington/Olympic League Liberty Division but also trailed Triton by just two points in the power points standings. So the Eagles game against the Indians did start they way they wanted, but did finish in a way they needed. After trailing early in the first quarter, Seneca would score the next twenty-three points to defeat Lenape by a 30-13 margin. Tim Meise finished the game with 118 yards on 21 carries for the Golden Eagles. |

It was a physical game with two teams looking to take advantage with their finesse and speed. The Lenape boy’s soccer team traveled to Cherry Hill West trying to pick up their third win in a row against the Lions. Both of these teams did not possess that one dominate player that could single handedly take over a game, but they had players on the field that had the talent of scoring goals. In a very closely matched game, Jim Eveland would provide the eventual game winner against West and helped Lenape pick up the 2-0 victory. |

South Jersey Sports Online would like to send our congratulations to the 8 new members of the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame. The South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame now has a total of 138 members. The first class to be inducted was back in 1988. A member can be an Official, Player, Coach or Contributor. This year’s class consisted of one contributor, four players, and three coaches. |

When two good softball teams meet on the field knowing that the opposing pitchers have the capability of striking out everyone that stands up at the plate, each player must take advantage of every situation that’s presented in order to score runs. The starting pitchers, Jamie Moir for Lenape and Alyssa O’Connell for Camden Catholic, are considered two of the best pitchers in South Jersey. Only one hit was surrendered in this Olympic Conference game which meant that someone pitched a no hitter. O’Connell would not give up a single hit, but did not win the game for Camden Catholic. Lenape would score the only run of the game on a fielder’s choice during the first inning. Moir would take over for the rest of the game striking out fifteen batters to pick up the 1-0 decision. |

When the Lady Chiefs from Cherokee took the field against Lenape in an Olympic Conference American Division softball game, it was a strange site to see their previous coach standing on the opposite side of the field. Mike Medrick, who had coached Cherokee to a 28-0 record and a couple of titles two years ago, was now the head coach for Lenape. But in this game, the players are the ones on the field working hard at coming away with the victory. Lenape would tie this game in the eighth inning to extend the game even further and then win it in the bottom the tenth when Jamie Moir’s single drove in her sister Kelsey for the winning run and a 4-3 victory. |

The typical ending of a basketball game at any level of play did not happen during the South Jersey Group 4 semifinals held at Shawnee High School. Sure we have seen the exciting last second shot made to come away victorious, but the way the game ended with the fifth seeded Lenape Indians traveling to the top seeded Renegades, it was one to remember. Matt McFadden’s three pointer with two seconds remaining gave Shawnee a three point lead. On the inbounds pass, Shawnee was hit with a technical for having too many players on the court. After both free throws were converted, Lenape’s Ryan Thompson was fouled behind the arch with no time remaining. Shawnee would survive the dramatic 53-52 ending after all three shots missed their mark. |

We hear it all the time from the coaching staff about jumping out to an early lead puts the opposing team out of their game. The Lenape boys’ basketball team lately has been leaving their opponents looking for an alternate game plan searching for a way to cut into their deficit. This time it was Washington Township finding themselves down by double digits in the first quarter against the Indians at Lenape High School. From that point on, Lenape was able to cruise to the 46-27 win and pick up their fourth victory in a row. |

Lenape goalie John Hood stopped 31 shots and withstood an Eastern power play in the final minutes as Lenape skated to a 2-2 tie with Eastern on Monday night in Voorhees. It was the third straight tie for Lenape, after last week’s ties with Clearview and Cinnaminson. After a scoreless first period, Lenape scored twice in just over a minute. Jim Sauerbaum converted a pass from Alex Shaffer early in the period and then on the power play Frank Wittman made it 2-0 with the assists going to Matt Bozman and Brad Reed. |

It was an emotional title game for both teams. Washington Township and Lenape were very familiar opponents and it was no secret who the scorers were on the team. Lenape has been successful coming away with the victory against the Minutemaids during the regular season, but it was Washington Township who took an early lead in this South Jersey Group 4 girl's soccer title game. Lenape quickly swung the momentum in their favor in the second half when two quick goals pushed them in the lead for good. Allison Williams and Lindsay Walsh provided all of the scoring needed to capture the 3-1 victory. |

Here we go again with a test to see if teams can improve or repeat their quest to advance further that they ever had. The Vikings from Atlantic City was one of those teams making the postseason for the first time in a while and were traveling to Lenape to take on the third seeded Indians. Lenape was looking to improve on capturing the South Jersey Group 3 title instead of just making it to it. Five second half goals broke a somewhat close game open. Lenape now advances to the next round with their 6-0 victory and will host Absegami. |

The South Jersey Coaches Tournament Finals were held at Rutgers-Camden University this Sunday. With the wind wiping off the Delaware River, which had an effect on the game, most of the game was played at the end closest to the baseball diamond. With 32:30 left in the first half, Lenape’s Danielle Shine, with the wind at her back, crossed a ball from the left. The ball went up high, hit the ground around the six-box and bounced high in the air. Cinnaminson’s Keeper, Lauren Wojcik, jumped to grab it but was distracted by Lindsay Walsh. The ball bounced off Wojcik’s hand and just crossed over the line, without hitting the ground, as Walsh was yelling it was a goal. The Linesman agreed and Lenape took a 1-0 lead off of a wind helped goal. |

Getting that first win of the season is always important to a team especially when that team has the lead late in the fourth quarter. Giving a team their first win of the season can also rally a team to find a way to win a game. After all was said and done, this game turned out to be an exciting football game held at Lenape High School. Rancocas Valley was able to hold off the Indians for three quarters leading by a touchdown. Lenape would take advantage of a late turnover and capitalized on their good field position to avoid overtime and defeat the Red Devils by a 19-12 margin. |

Every win counts but every lose has to sting a bit when your team is expected to come out on top of your division. For the Lady Indians from Lenape High School, the expectations are high and so far they haven't disappointed anyone yet. With a scoreless first half, it would come down to the team that could demonstrate the ability to come up with the big plays. Both teams would do so as this Olympic Conference girl's soccer game had to be decided in the overtime period. Lenape's Jamie Kunkel long distance shot found its way into the net giving the Indians the 2-1 victory. |
