High School Football: Saturday, September 9, 2006 By G. Davis On Friday and Saturday, September 8 and 9, the Pine Hill Board of Education and Overbrook Varsity Club held a Dinner and Dedication Ceremony in honor of Coach Larry Mauriello. As of September 9th, the Overbrook High School Varsity Football Field will become the Larry Mauriello Varsity Football Complex. It is particularly fitting that we honor Coach Mauriello in this manner as an acknowledgement of his numerous contributions made as the head coach of the Overbrook High School Football Program. During his reign, the team has won 156 games, two Conference Championships, and one State Championship. However, Coach Mauriello’s dedication to the Overbrook High School has extended beyond the sport of football. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, May 10, 2006 By Jerome Michaels It was the day after the highly anticipated non-league game against West Deptford was over. The Rams from Gloucester Catholic had defeated the undefeated Eagles the night before and had to put that game behind them has they were hosting yet another successful baseball team. The Crusaders from Delsea found out quickly how focused a baseball team can be. The Rams jumped out to a seven run lead after the first two innings were completed and continued to separate themselves from their opponent. When this game ended, Gloucester Catholic had picked up their eleventh win in a row by defeating the Crusaders by a 13-3 margin. |
High School Wrestling: Saturday, January 21, 2006 By Anthony Phillips Every team sport has their strategies on how to come away with the win. Wrestling is no different as the decisions of the coach staff could determine the outcome of a match. But no matter what the coach's instructions are, the game or match is decided by the kids' individual efforts on the mat. In a non-league match held at Eastern, the Vikings were hosting the Crusaders from Delsea. With only four points separating these two teams heading into the final bout, the Vikings would be looking for a pin in order to set back Crusader’s chances of coming away with the win. But Mike McGaha turned the tables and pinned his opponent to secure the 40-30 decision for Delsea. |
High School Football: Saturday, December 3, 2005 By Clark Washington It was evident from the opening ceremonies up until the final minutes remaining in the game. The Crusaders from Delsea were on a mission of capturing the South Jersey Group III title and win their 12th game in a row. The mission involved a very calm Delsea football team with one thing on their mind, and that was to remain extremely focused on their quest. Even with a three touchdown lead, the only indication that Delsea was winning was the capacity home crowd providing the celebrations. But with time ticking down to the final moments, the Gatorade bath attempt would begin. The Crusaders would only give up a last second touchdown by Lacey Township and go on to defeat the Lions 21-6 to complete their undefeated season. |
High School Soccer: Friday, September 23, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Based on what has happened so far, it would be safe to say that Highland's boy's soccer team has gotten off to a good start this season. By winning five of their first six games, the Tartans are sitting on top of the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. Each one of Highland's victories has resulted in the defense keeping their opponents from scoring any goals. Delsea's efforts would come up short as Mike Cullen netted three goals highlighting Highland's 6-0 victory at home. Mike Flacco would pick up his third straight shutout in the net for the Tartans. |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 31, 2005 By Jason Brown With the month of May down to its final day, most high school students have begun to count down the days until their summer break. For the baseball team from Delsea, a win on the last day of the month would propel them into the South Jersey Group 3 Finals. In order to advance into the month of June, the third seeded Crusaders traveled to Highland to take on the Tartans. Josh Sulzman delivered a two out bases clearing triple that highlighted a seven run second inning and Delsea never looked back. Starting pitcher Josh Krautwald also knocked in a couple of runs to help Delsea move into the finals with their 14-3 victory. |
High School Football: Saturday, November 13, 2004 By Jerome Michaels They say that having an offense that can scored touchdowns wins games, but the defense is what wins championships. During the first quarter of the South Jersey Group 3 first round football game at Pemberton, the Hornets took care of the offensive scoring part of attempting to win the game. And for three quarters, Pemberton’s defense prevented Delsea from putting any points on the scoreboard. Lester Goffney took control of the running duties scoring a touchdown for the Hornets and continued their winning ways with a 20-6 victory. Pemberton will now travel to Deptford to take on the Spartans. |
High School Football: Saturday, October 9, 2004 By Jerome Michaels Sure there have been teams that have gone two to three football seasons without losing a game. When a team accomplishes any winning streak that has gone to double digits, that team deserves to be congratulated on playing together as a team to come away with all of those wins. Deptford's success continues on the football field when they hosted the Crusaders from Delsea. Two touchdowns by Sheldon Johnson and an insurance touchdown run by DaJuane Collins were enough points for the defense to preserve Deptford's 19-13 Tri-County Conference Royal Division victory. |
