Philadelphia trailed 2-1 through two periods before captain Boyd Kane evened the score 1:41 into the third when Joni Pitkanen set him up for a breakaway from the blue line. Freddy Meyer also assisted on Kane's eighth goal of the year. |
Soccer Spotlight: Saturday, March 26, 2005 By David Deal The Philadelphia KiXX (19-14) secured their hold on second place in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) standings with an 8-2 victory versus the Cleveland Force (16-14) in front of 4,783 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum. KiXX player/assistant coach Kevin Sloan registered the game-winning goal at 12:04 of the second quarter. Peter Pappas (16-12) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, stopping all eight of the ten shots he faced in the first half, while Jim Larkin (14-12) took the loss for the Force with 12 saves on 18 chances. |
South Jersey Ice Hockey: Friday, March 25, 2005 By Ike Richman The nation's best Tier II PeeWee youth hockey players will compete in the 2005 USA Hockey Tier II 12 & Under National Championships from Wednesday, March 30 through Sunday, April 3, 2005 at the Sovereign Bank Flyers Skate Zone at Voorhees. Twelve teams were selected to compete from 11 geographical districts. Two area teams are from the Atlantic district: the Quakers (West Chester, PA) and the host team, Flyers Youth (Voorhees, NJ). The districts that will be represented are New York, New England, Pacific, Rocky Mountain, Atlantic, Southeastern, Mid-American, Michigan, Alaska, Massachusetts, Central, and Host. All teams have qualified for National Championships by winning their respective District Championship; Flyers Youth gets an automatic berth as the host team. |
South Jersey Baseball: Friday, March 25, 2005 By Bill Cook The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that Philadelphia Flyers Captain Keith Primeau will visit Waterfront Park when the Trenton Thunder take on the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday, April 14th. Primeau will be on hand to throw out a ceremonial first pitch and sign autographs for fans. He has been with the Flyers since 1999 when he was traded from the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes and has been the Flyers captain since 2001. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, March 25, 2005 By Al Cohen Five different Phantoms scored and Antero Niittymaki needed to make just 19 saves as Philadelphia posted a 5-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons tonight at the Wachovia Spectrum. Ryan Ready and Jon Sim gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes of play before Josh Gratton and Tony Voce each recorded a goal and an assist in the third to blow the game wide open. Philadelphia won for the sixth time in its last eight games as it assumed sole possession of first place in the AHL's East Division. The Phantoms (87 points) are now two points ahead of Binghamton and three in front of Norfolk, both of which were idle tonight. |

College Softball: Monday, March 21, 2005 By Mike Ballard Junior Michelle Schlichtig turned in a phenomenal week during the Lady Raptors’ 8-0 softball trip to Florida last week, going 6-0 with one save and a no-hitter on the mound and batting .500 with a 1.154 slugging percentage and 17 RBIs. She allowed only 18 hits and four runs (three earned) in 37-2/3 innings, walking 10 and striking out 51. She had three doubles, a triple and four home runs, and capped her week with a no-hitter against Molloy March 18, walking three and striking out 12. |
