South Jersey Baseball: Saturday, June 19, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf fell to the Newark Bears Saturday night at Sandcastle Stadium, 7-4. The Surf were never able to bounce back from a third inning three-run homerun by Danny Clyburn. The Surf scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Right fielder Ozzie Timmons hit a two-run home run, his ninth, to put the Surf up 2-1. The Surf did not score again until they scored a run in the bottom of the eighth. Left fielder Chad Alexander had the other two RBI for the Surf along with his two hits. Third baseman Raul Marval also collected two hits and scored two runs. |
South Jersey Soccer: Thursday, June 17, 2004 By John Thompson Following the abandonment of the Open Cup game a new date has been set by US Soccer. A day of discussion Wednesday between the U.S. Soccer Federation, which runs the summer-long tournament involving pro and amateur clubs, the Salty Dogs and the Barons failed to produce a makeup date. The Barons Lamar Hunt US Open Cup game against Syracuse will be re-played on Monday June 21st, 2004, at Winslow H.S. Kick off is at 5.30pm. The game will be re-played in its entirety, however, the two players sent off from Syracuse will serve there suspensions during this game. |
South Jersey Baseball: Thursday, June 17, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Surf finished up their nine-game road trip with a 12-6 loss to the Nashua Pride last night. Clint Chrysler got the win for the Pride and raised his record 3-0. Rodney Dickinson took the loss and evened his record at 2-2. Ozzie Timmons did hit his eighth home run of the year. The Surf return to the Sandcastle tomorrow night to begin a stretch of nine home games in ten days. Tomorrow night the Surf will open that home stretch with the first of three against the Newark Bears. |

Senior Jeff Justice (Pedricktown, N.J./Penns Grove) and junior pitchers Alan Drechsler (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Athena) and Matt Scherer (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Ketcham) were named first team all-region, while sophomore Andre Enriquez (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit) and senior Kyle Brown (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie) were named to the second team. |
South Jersey Soccer: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 By John Thompson Tuesday night was one of the biggest occasion the South Jersey Barons had experienced since there appearance in the D3 pro league national title game back in 1999. With the prospect of playing the Columbus Crew from the MLS in the Third Round the young Barons players were eager to prove their worth against professional players from Syracuse. The young guns from the Barons gave as good as they got in a hot tempered game that quickly turned into a nightmare for both sides. Syracuse looked the stronger side early on in the game and took a deserved 1-0 lead on 22 min's after good work down the right wing set up Csaba Kerkekes who scored his second goal in two games for the Salty Dogs. |
South Jersey Baseball: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Surf took the second game of a three-game series with the Nashua Pride last night as Orlando Miller hit two home runs to lead the way for Jeff Ball''s bunch. With one on in the second inning, Chad Alexander was hit by a pitch, after which Miller answered with a three-run home run that set the pace for the Surf''s evening. He hit his second of the evening and fifth on the year in the ninth to give the Surf and Conor Brooks some breathing room. |
Arena Football: Tuesday, June 15, 2004 By Matthew Gionta The CardSharks offense has been getting all the glory thus far this season, but the defense is turning the tide as Cornerback Chonn Lacey has been name the Week 14 Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Lacey played a key role in the ‘Sharks 41-27 victory over the visiting Fort Wayne Freedom. Lacey picked off two passes, including a first-quarter interception return for a 21 yard touchdown. Lacey also pitched in with 2 tackles on the night, and had 3 passes defended. He has intercepted at least 1 pass in the last three games, and has 5 interceptions in that time. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, June 15, 2004 By Chuck Betson Glenn Murray hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal a victory away from the Surf last night 7-6. On the positive side for the Surf, Mark Brownson pitched four shutout innings in relief before being lifted in the ninth after giving up a walk. The offensive highlights for the Surf were Melvin Rosario''s third home run and "Meatball" Heath''s twenty-third stolen base of the season. Marc Deschenes got the win and moved his record to 2-0, while Conor Brooks took the loss and dropped his record to 1-1. |
South Jersey Baseball: Tuesday, June 15, 2004 By Dan Loney The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced today that RHPs Buddy Carlyle and Carlos Reyes have been promoted to Columbus (AAA- International League) and that RHP Ramon Ramirez has been activated from the Disabled List. Carlyle is 4-0, 0.72 ERA for the season with the Thunder. He has 48 strikeouts and 4 walks in 37.1 innings with just 23 hits allowed. During the past week, he didn't allow a run in two games. |
South Jersey Baseball: Monday, June 14, 2004 By Chuck Betson The Atlantic City Surf were held to six hits last night in a 12-3 loss to the Long Island Ducks at Citibank Park. Raul Marval and Dario Delgado were able to deliver two hits each, but the rest of the team was only able to scratch two more hits among them. Lance Davis was the winning pitcher and raised his record to 4-3, while Marty Barnett took the loss and dropped his record to 2-3. |
South Jersey Soccer: Monday, June 14, 2004 By John Thompson On Tuesday 15th June, 2004 it will be the First time in Lamar Hunt US Open Cup history that two brothers have will play against each other. Two brothers from Cape May, Matt and Anthony Maher will line up for the South Jersey Barons (PDL) and Syracuse Salty Dogs (A-League) respectively in the second round of the famous cup competition. The Maher brothers match up will provide added spice to this already exciting cup match for the Barons. The history of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is riddled with upsets and shocks. The Barons will look to past conquerors like the Mid- Michigan Bucks (Amateur) who in 2000 knocked out the New England Revolution (MLS) in the second round on a memorable run in the competition. |
