High School Softball: Friday, April 30, 2004 By Susan Hall It was a match-up between two very successful softball programs from the Burlington County Liberty Division. Both the Red Devils from Rancocas Valley and Greyhounds from Northern Burlington had won all of their previously scheduled games so for this season. So when starting pitchers Lisa Sweeney got the start for Rancocas, it would be a dual against her counterpart Chelsea Morgan. On this day, Sweeney picked up right where she left off keeping batters dazed and confused, but most important hitless. The Red Devils won this game by a 3-0 margin extending their winning streak to twelve games. |
High School Lacrosse: Friday, April 30, 2004 By Joyce Sagerty It has been a while since the game of lacrosse has been watched by this reporter who rarely gets the opportunity to relax in a chair enjoy it. It didn't take long to notice that these two teams, Cherry Hill East and Cherry Hill West, were closely matched team filled with role players with speed could simply take over a game. During the beginning of the first half, West's momentum after the face off could not be stopped. East would rebound to take the lead, but it would be that early momentum that was remembered by the Lady Cougars that allowed them to pull off the 13-12 upset over Cherry Hill East. |
High School Baseball: Friday, April 30, 2004 By Vincent Lewis Plain and simple, in order for a team to come away with a solid victory there has to be good pitching and error free defense. Okay, sometimes that doesn’t always happen as on several occasion, a batter or batters will have a good day at the plate. Take for instance the Colonial Conference game between Sterling and Audubon. Homeruns, triples, doubles and a total of 22 runners crossing the plate made a bad day for the pitchers on the mound. After the dust had cleared, Sterling's late inning rally allowed them to pick up the 14-8 road victory. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, April 30, 2004 By Al Cohen Blake Bellefeuille's power-play goal with 1:54 remaining was the difference tonight at the Scope as the Norfolk Admirals posted a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms in Game Five of the East Division Semifinals. Philadelphia, which captured Games Three and Four in Norfolk earlier in the week, still owns a three games to two lead in the best-of-seven series. Winning Ways (FYI):
Full-Body Flexibility Thursday, April 29, 2004 By Gregory "Graig" White "Most fitness enthusiasts and athletes stretch before and after exercise. They stretch to warm up, to help prevent injuries, and to cool down. Now more people are beginning to realize stretching can also be an incredibly effective fitness routine." This is how the release for Jay Blahnik's "Full-Body Flexibility" starts, and I am having a real tough time getting on board with this statement. Don't get me wrong, stretching is important, but it has been my experience that sometimes this aspect of fitness gets the short end of the stick. |

In a divisional game played at Medford Tech, New Egypt batted around during their first at bat that sent a message for the rest of the game. High School Baseball: Tuesday, April 27, 2004 By Jerome Michaels High school competition in our area has a few twists that provide some interesting match ups when looking at a regular scheduled game. For instance two schools from the same township but in two different conferences. A rivalry that seems easy to become very familiar with, but not always played every season on the ball field. For West Deptford and Deptford, it was a treat for these two neighboring school to compete against one another and even a bigger treat for the Spartans who were the ones coming away with the 6-1 victory. Ryan Sullivan picked up the win for Deptford. |
