Event Spotlight: Sunday, March 9, 2003 By David W. Unkle Coming off two overtime losses this weekend, the last team the Philadelphia Phantoms wanted to face was Norfolk. For the third game in a row, the Phantoms took a lead into the third period while shutting out their opponent. Philadelphia started the game with the same lackluster performance that created the overtime loss to the 16-42-5-3 Lowell Lock Monsters. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 8, 2003 By Jerome Michaels It was a game that both team remembered with one team moving on, one team moving out. Last year, the Paulsboro Red Raiders met on different circumstances as they faced the Blue Devils at Burlington City High School. The Blue Devils were the top seeded team ending Paulsboro season in their semi-finals match-up. Burlington City went on to win the title. This year, the reverse…Paulsboro seeded number one and Burlington City holding down the fifth seed of the South Jersey Group 1 playoff bracket. Destined to improve from last year, Paulsboro won this year’s semi-finals game 72-59 to earn a right to compete against Schalick for the championship game. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 8, 2003 By Art Redd All in attendance for the boy’s semifinals basketball game between Camden and Woodrow Wilson knew they were in for a highly competitive battle. The first time these two teams met, the entertaining Olympic Conference National Divisional match-up was decided by a basket by Wayne Smalls giving Camden the one point victory. In this game, the first quarter proved to be the difference as Shamari Moore scored 15 of the Panthers’ 31 points. That lead held up for Camden as Wilson’s second half surge came up short giving the Panthers a trip to the South Jersey Group 3 finals winning 79-74 at Cherry Hill East High School. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, March 8, 2003 By Art Redd Shalamar Oakley erased all doubts about, if the Lady Tigers from Woodrow Wilson could finally beat the girl's basketball team from Highland High School. These two teams met in last year's semifinals game with the Lady Tartans pulling away to advance to the championship game. This year, Oakley's three pointer that beat the buzzer to end the first half was a good indication of things to come. Her twenty second half points highlighted the Tigers' 60-48 win at Cherry Hill East High School in semifinals action. With the win, the Lady Tigers will meet the Willingboro Lady Chimeras for the South Jersey Group 3 group championship. |
High School Ice Hockey: Saturday, March 8, 2003 By Mike Costantino Coming off an exciting season that included a strong showing in the SJHSIHL Tournament, the Paul VI Eagles met the Paul VI Panthers, a team from Fairfax County, Virginia in the inaugural series featuring the varsity and junior varsity teams from two schools bearing the same name. The idea was born when a parent involved with the hockey program in Virginia, came across the Paul VI Eagles web site. After contacting club president Barry Isbert, an agreement was made that each year the teams would take turns traveling to the other’s rink and play an exhibition game between the varsity and junior varsity squads. The Eagles dominated the junior varsity game as they won easily 12-3. Most of the team contributed goals as Adam Cantiello, Matt Darnell, Dan Whitzer and Jared Brasten led the Eagles. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, March 7, 2003 By Mike Costantino Clearview defeated Cherokee 7-1 on Friday at High Ridge and will now move on to play Eastern on Monday night at Voorhees. In order to win the championship, Clearview must defeat Eastern on Monday and then again on Wednesday. Since Eastern went through the tournament undefeated, they need to just win Monday and be crowned champs. Back to the game…the line of Chris Riggs, Bill Dunbar and Wyatt Fox combined for six goals and eight assists and created scoring chances almost every shift. Dunbar led the way with three goals and Riggs added two. With their power play clicking in the last two games, Clearview took advantage of the extra skater as Riggs put home a rebound of a shot from the point by Nick Vaccarino. |
Event Spotlight: Friday, March 7, 2003 By David W. Unkle The Phantoms continue their late season skid giving up the tying goal in the third period and surrendering a power play goal in overtime as the visiting Worcester IceCats stole the game in front of 6,088 fans at the First Union Spectrum. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, March 6, 2003 By Art Redd The Chargers were a determined group of girl's wanting to take full advantage of the position that they were put in during this year's tournament. With their fourth seed, Timber Creek would host their first ever home game against the twelfth seeded Lady Quakers from Moorestown. Right from the opening tip-off, Timber Creek were not looking to be in the news as Moorestown's latest upset victims. All five starting players on the court for the Chargers wanted to touch the ball and score. That determination got Timber Creek the 49-29 win in front of their hometown fans. |

High School Basketball: Wednesday, March 5, 2003 By Susan Hall The number one seeded Panthers from Collingswood were waiting around for the first round of the girl’s South Jersey Group 2 playoffs to complete. Their opponent would be against the Wildcats from Pinelands, as they would defeat Delran to advance to the next round. Eager to get the post season started, Collingswood demonstrated that they were ready to defend their top seed status by rolling all over the Wildcats from start to finish. The Panthers held their opponent to just six points in the first and moved on to the next round with their 50-37 win at home. |
High School Ice Hockey: Wednesday, March 5, 2003 By Mike Costantino Clearview scored four goals in the third period to break open a tight game and defeated Washington Township 9-4 in tournament action at Voorhees. Chris Riggs led the Clearview attack with three goals and four assists and Dave Gooch and Mike Sullivan chipped in with two goals each. Mike Duczkowski led Township with two goals. With Township playing in the AAA league this season, it was the first time the teams had met in a meaningful game and unfortunately for their fans, ice time was not available at Hollydell. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, March 4, 2003 By Jerome Michaels These two teams knew each other well as both represented the Tri-County Conference Royal Division. Today was the beginning of the first round of the South Jersey Group III boy’s playoffs for these teams. During the regular season, it was always the Dragons from Kingsway chasing the Pioneers from Clearview in the standings. On this day, it was the other way around as Kingsway jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Kingsway, behind the shooting of Jared Blair, outlasted Clearview 55-47 to advance to the next round against Willingboro. |
Event Spotlight: Tuesday, March 4, 2003 By David W. Unkle The Flyers are playing some of their best hockey as the team finishes the final four weeks of the regular season and much of the credit belongs to goaltender Roman Cechmanek. His eighteenth career shutout with the Flyers came at the hands of the torrid Vancouver Canucks who lost for only the second time in their last eleven games (7-2-2). |
High School Basketball: Monday, March 3, 2003 By Jerome Michaels This is always an exciting time…March Madness has begun for the area high schools, as they will compete for their version of the national title. The first round of the South Jersey Group IV boy’s playoff began with the Renegades from Shawnee hosting the eleventh seeded Vikings from Eastern. The sixth seeded Renegades, behind the shooting of Bill Kurtz, regained a second half deficit to pull out the 41-37 victory. Eastern’s late rally to upset the Renegades fell short as Kurtz’s clutch shooting earned a berth in the next round of the playoffs. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, March 3, 2003 By Mike Costantino Chris Riggs and Dave Gooch each scored twice as Clearview defeated Paul VI 6-1 at Voorhees on Monday night. The Eagles played without leading scorer Brett Balco who was sidelined with an injury and really missed his leadership. Freshman goalie Eric Lake was spectacular in goal again for Paul VI as he faced fifty-four shots, many form close in and kept his team in the game. After Gooch scored in the games first minute, as he was left alone in the slot. Eli Facchinei tied the score at 1-1 by utilizing his speed and was sent in by Mike DiGennaro whose quick shot found the net. With Lake playing solid, the Eagles went on the power play at around the six-minute mark with a chance to take the lead. But Nick Vaccarino kept the puck in for Clearview and Wyatt Fox fed Riggs down low and he redirected the puck into the short side and Clearview led 2-1. |
High School Basketball: Monday, March 3, 2003 By Crystal Parker It has been a very exciting season for the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West girl's basketball teams. Finishing the season with a 15-7 record, West would start out their tournament run with a 39-29 victory over the Lady Indians from Pennsauken. Last year, the Lions were seeded lower in the South Jersey Group IV playoff bracket and were knocked out of the tournament in the first round. This year was a different story as the Lions, seeded seventh this year, won their first round playoff game since 1998 after beating Jackson Memorial. Cherry Hill West will now travel to the second seeded Toms River North. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, March 3, 2003 By Mike Costantino Fred Brewer scored his second goal of the game with less than four minutes remaining in the second overtime as Washington Township defeated Cherry Hill East 5-4 to remain alive in the tournament. Township will now meet Clearview on Wednesday night at Voorhees. Playing in front of a packed house and against AAA competition, East gave Township everything they could handle and almost came away with the victory. Louis Stomel paced the East attack with two goals. East scored a power play goal in the games first three minutes as Stomel jammed home a rebound of a shot by James Brown who seemed to be all over the ice. Brewer tied the game at 1-1 as his slap shot from the point found the back of the net. The teams traded shorthanded goals in the second period. First Pat Capone broke in and beat Saunders with a quick wrist shot and then Jon Sacks responded for East as Jay Fitcher sent him in for the tying goal. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, March 3, 2003 By Mike Costantino Sean Sullivan scored four goals and Danny Meyers stopped thirty-one shots as the Eastern Vikings advanced to the finals of the SJHSIHL Tournament with a 6-1 defeat of defending champion Cherokee Chiefs. Meyers made at least two unbelievable saves in each period and with each game leaves no doubt as who is the best goalie in the league. Eastern also capitalized on the man advantage, scoring three power play goals, the first came in the last few seconds of the first period as Anthony Orner buried a shot on a feed from Sullivan and Brandon Tunstall. Early in the second period, Rich DeMonte made a nice play at the point intercepting a clearing pass and then ripping a shot from the point that found the net and Eastern led 2-0. |
