High School Basketball: Saturday, January 25, 2003 By Art Redd Playing at home against a team that has been rolling past their opponents, Sterling needed someone to come up big against the Lady Garnets from Haddon Heights. Freshman forward Kate Brennan and sophomore guard Amanda Brennan took control when it counted late in the fourth quarter to stunned Heights winning by three points, 45-42. Kate Brennan lined up her shot from 20 feet away to snap a tie with just over a minute and a half remaining in the game. That three pointer put the Lady Knights up for good to move one step closer to the division leaders. |
Event Spotlight: Saturday, January 25, 2003 By David KiXX The 2001-02 Major Indoor Soccer League Champions, Philadelphia KiXX (18-4), defeated the Kansas City Comets (11-12) 13-8 in front of 6,231 fans at the First Union Spectrum. The crowd was the largest for Philadelphia this season. Joel Shanker recorded the game-winner from Chris Handsor at 8:16 of the fourth quarter. Peter Pappas (14-3) earned the victory for Philadelphia, recording 14 saves on 18 shots, while Wes Wade (0-2) took the loss for the Comets, stopping 17 of the 22 shots he faced. |

The Rams were two games under five hundred and were looking to come back with a win after suffering a one-point loss to Florence. Standing in their way was a determined Granville Charter boy's basketball team who overcame a double digital lead to send this non-league contest into overtime. This time, Darryl Canty's 26 points helped the home team get by Granville 73-69. |

When you have more than one player who can at least get open to take that open shot, it can only lead to success. It's no secret that Nicole Jones can dominate a game, but it is evident that the entire squad gets the create for the Lady Garnets winning ways. In a very competitive game, the Lady Lions from Lindenwold put up a great fight but loss to Haddon Heights by a score of 47-42. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 23, 2003 By Vincent Lewis The Red Devils have been cruising through their schedule so far this season and were looking to add another win to their divisional record against the boy's basketball team from Willingboro High School. Rancocas had not loss a game since late December and were riding an eight game winning streak. The Chimeras' intensity definitely controlled this game giving them the 76-50 victory at home over the leaders of the Burlington County Liberty Division. With the win, Willingboro extended their winning streak to six games. |
Event Spotlight: Wednesday, January 22, 2003 By Al Cohen Jason Bacashihua stopped all 28 shots he faced to notch his second shutout of the season and lead the Utah Grizzlies to a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms tonight at the First Union Spectrum. Bacashihua was particularly effective in the first period with 12 saves, including stopping a 2-on-1 rush and a pair of point-blank shots by Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Barrett Heisten and Jeff MacMillan each netted goals during the opening 20 minutes to help Utah open a five-game road trip in successful fashion. |

The Warriors travelled to Gloucester City on Tuesday night sitting on top of the division with a half game lead over Salem after losing a tough game to the Rams last Friday. Gloucester City likewise was a half game back and looking to move up to the top after a disappointing loss to Schalick on Friday. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, January 20, 2003 By Mike Costantino Kevin Desrochers scored three goals as Cherry Hill East shut out St. John Neumann 5-0 and finish the season without a loss. The two teams will meet again for the Tier 2 championship on Friday night January 31 at Hollydell. Neumann will have that long to figure out how to generate more offense, as they had a season low ten shots on goal. After a scoreless first period, East scored three goals in a span of four minutes to take control of the game. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, January 20, 2003 By Mike Costantino Chris Riggs had two goals and Mike Sullivan added a goal and two assists to help Clearview defeat Eastern 5-3 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. With the win, Clearview clinched first place in Tier 1 and the number 2 seed for the upcoming double elimination tournament. Both teams were missing key players. Eastern was without Sean Sullivan and John Piermetti while Clearview skated without David Gooch and Jon Probe. Not having his two top scorers, Coach Sullivan needed contributions from his second and third lines along with strong goaltending and that's exactly what he got. |
