High School Baseball: Add Parochial B State Champions to Bishop Eustace's Records Saturday, June 8, 2002 By Vincent Lewis Perfectly executed plays, smart base running and well placed hits demonstrated how focused Sam Tropiano's Crusaders were on Saturday afternoon at Toms River East High School. Now add the pitching of the reliable Nick Iannucci and you have the makings of a championship team. Bishop Eustace rolled into Dover Township for their match up with Montclair Kimberley and marched out with the State Parochial B trophy with their 5-1 victory. Matt Tobia's two run home run highlighted Bishop Eustace's quest of being the best they can be. |
High School Softball: Washington Township Wins State Group 4 Championship Saturday, June 8, 2002 By Vincent Lewis Kristy Pron knew it was only a matter of time before the Minutemaids from Washington Township would come through for her. Washington Township's bats came alive in the third inning to give Pron than enough runs to win this game. Township would score seven unanswered runs as the defense shutout West Milford to capture the title game. |
High School Softball: The 2002 South Jersey Group 2 State Champs are the Ladies from Northern Burlington Saturday, June 8, 2002 By Crystal Parker It was a play that will be remembered by all attending the South Jersey Group 2 State championship game against Northern Burlington and Pompton Lakes played at Toms River North. All the Greyhounds needed was one more out in the last inning to be recognized as the State champions. With a runner in scoring position and two outs, Greyhounds' centerfielder Dusty Archer and right fielder Jessica Gibbs were charging on a fly ball in the outfield. Not to be denied, Archer came up with the catch for not only the third out of the inning but also giving Northern Burlington their first ever state championship with a 1-0 victory over Pompton Lakes. |

High School Softball: Tuesday, June 4, 2002 By Vincent Lewis Gloucester Catholic has been in this situation before, time after time. Coach Julie McHenry has watched this hungry team take advantage of every opportunity her team was given to them. Bishop Eustace ran into a team who did whatever was necessary to achieve their goal. Brianne Tobin struck out eight batters and allowed the defense to complete the Rams 4-0 shutout against the Lady Crusaders and take home the South Jersey Parochial B title. |

Event Spotlight: 0-0 Tie versus San Jose Proves Costly for Charge Tuesday, June 4, 2002 By David W. UnkleSJSports Staff Writer Saturday night's 0-0 tie versus the defending WUSA champion San Jose Cyber Rays maintained Philadelphia's first place lead (5-1-1) and their undefeated streak at home but it cost them the services of the WUSA's leading scorer. Forward Kelly Smith tore her anterior cruciate ligament in with less than twenty minutes remaining in the game and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher, effectively ending her WUSA season. Less than 48 hours after her injury, Smith was named WUSA Player of the Month for May 2002 as she led the Charge to a 3-1-0 record while scoring two goals and three assists. |
Event Spotlight: Philadelphia Phantoms 2001-02 Wrap-Up Monday, June 3, 2002 By David W. Unkle & Mike Williams (SJSports Special Correspondent) In their sixth season, the Philadelphia Phantoms finished a mediocre 2001-02 season with a 33-27-15-5 record and saw their hopes to seriously challenge for the Calder Cup end in a first round sweep at the hands of the Syracuse Crunch. The team's abysmal stretch run (4-15-2) was the result of injuries (John Slaney and Brad Tiley), constant roster changes, and a team that was looking for a leader to hold player's feet to the fire. The end-result: a team that limped (barely) into the playoffs and got a quick start to the summer picnic season. Here are the club's final grades, based on the club's final roster. |
