Gloucester Catholic has been in this situation before, time after time. Coach Julie McHenry has watched this hungry team take advantage of every opportunity her team was given to them. Bishop Eustace ran into a team who did whatever was necessary to achieve their goal. Brianne Tobin struck out eight batters and allowed the defense to complete the Rams 4-0 shutout against the Lady Crusaders and take home the South Jersey Parochial B title.
Tobin has been masterful throughout Gloucester Catholic quest for not only the sectional title, but the state championship as well. The Lady Rams rolled to this game behind the shutout pitching of Tobin. The second-seeded Rams defeated the seventh-seeded Cardinal McCarrick (10-0) and the sixth-seeded Sacred Heart (10-0). Bishop Eustace, seeded fourth, quest included wins over the St. Rose (10-0) and beating the number one seeded St. Joseph (7-1).
After Tara Debes singled and advanced to third after stealing second base, Tobin singled later with runners on second and third. Ali Vennell added the third run of the inning giving Gloucester Catholic a 3-0 lead. Tobin had success not only on the mound, but also batting at the plate. She had a hit at each appearance to the plate highlighting this game. Gloucester Catholic's complete game didn't allow Bishop Eustace to gain any momentum in this championship game. The Lady Rams will play on Saturday at Toms River East against Montclair-Kimberley Academy for the state Parochial B championship.
