The beginning of the 1999 South Jersey Football season is filled with every team's anticipation of having a great start and winning every game. This afternoon at Camden Catholic High School, the Willingboro Chimeras were hoping for another easy game and start off the season on a winning note. Last year, the Chimeras had little problems defeating the fighting Irish. This time, Camden Catholic played a competitive game to put a scare into Willingboro's opener. The Chimeras held off the charging and determined Irish team 20-14 to hang on and start the season on the right foot.

Here at Lancer Field, Holy Cross hosting Mainland squared off in a slugfest that would rival Oscar Delahoya versus Felix Trinadad. In an intensely played, wild affair, it was the Mustangs of Mainland edging the Lancers of Holy Cross 44-41. On a beautiful day that was made for football, the packed house was treated to the kind of football that would make Papa Bear George Halas smile.

Now that the remnants of Hurricane Floyd have gone north, the season of South Jersey High School Football can get underway. With most practices limited during the week because of heavy rain and wind, it was time to finally hit someone other than a practice squad. Well, it was time for the Pennsauken Indians to travel to Jonas C. Morris Stadium to face the Cougars of Cherry Hill East. The Indians were the team to get their offense on track first to post a 20-7 victory on the road.

Viktor Dombrowsky's Cherry Hill East Girls were 1-0 with a 2-1 win over Pennsauken and Tony Procopio's Washington Township Girls were 1-0 with a 2-1 win over Bishop Eustace. They looked like evenly matched opponents, but the game wasn't even as close as the 4-0 score as the only time Washington Township was really in the game was at the end when, with the score at 4-0, Cherry Hill substituted nearly their entire bench into the game.

Edgewood opened the season on September 13th with a 5-0 win over Pennsauken. Strong performances were posted by both singles and doubles players. With three more matches on the schedule for the week, bad weather blew through and canceled our matches against both Paul VI and Cinnaminson. Sarah Goldberg has had a very busy year. This past summer she traveled to Israel with a large group of family members to get a first hand look at her cultural roots and, not the least, to meet her 101-year-old aunt. Soon after the trip, she was busy playing basketball as part of the 1999 Maccabi Games held here in South Jersey at Cherry Hill locations, sponsored by the Betty and Milton Katz Jewish Community Center.
