South Jersey Soccer: Sunday, September 12, 1999
By Boog Williams
It was opening day for Youth Soccer in South Jersey, and what a beautiful day. The sun was shining, the grass was finally green, and the kids were playing hard. I was asked by a friend to take photos of his son's soccer game. They started playing at 12:30. I made him a deal; if he would write an article, I would come to take photos, and he did. Unfortunately, I didn't know that I was going to be roped into covering two more games after his, but it was fun seeing kids playing and having a good time.

The South Jersey Barons lost in the National Championship Game at Ludlow, Massachusetts 2-1 before a more than capacity crowd. After a very tight first half that ended with no score, the Western Massachusetts Pioneers opened the scoring in the second half with a goal by Paul Wright, who put away a rebound off a Barons defender. Rob Jachym got the second goal when he beat a Barons defender then slipped by Paul Royal who was coming out to challenge him. Matt Brooks slammed home a pass from Eric Chijoke to make it 2-1 with eight minutes left in the game, but it was too late. Despite some last minute heroics by Majik Agu, the Barons season ended 1-2 against the Western Mass Pioneers. But the game itself wasn't the real story.

This year at Edgewood the ladies tennis team seems to be doing very well. We have eight returning starters, including the number one singles player, Alexis Swintenko, who played as a freshman last year. Kristin Wolf is playing very strong and is recovering fast from her knee injury. Michelle Hamersly has improved a lot and might have a spot as a varsity player.
