The Vineland Hurricanes roared back from a lackluster first half deficit to capture the Under-13 Boys Division of the 12th Annual Vineland Memorial Tournament. The Canes had won their age group in the previous two years against the Pittsgrove Vipers (1998) and the Medford Striker Sharks (1999). This year's challenger was the Cohansey Attack from Deerfield, NJ.

The Vineland Spectre went into the Vineland Memorial Day Soccer Tournament with high hopes and despite going undefeated, failed to make the finals. The Spectre tied Yardley PA 2 to 2 and beat Franklinville 3 to 1 on the first day of competition. Derrick Knowles and Alfie Latorre contributed two goals apiece and Martino Lasalandra had one. Defensive standouts for Vineland were Matt Morris and Josh Bocker, as goalie Chris Nettle continued his excellent play.

The Barons were expecting a large crowd as the game was being played at a convenient venue (Lenape High School in Medford, NJ). The rain kept the crowd away, but didn't cool the Barons. The Barons dominated the New Brunswick Brigade, and even though Paul Royal did get a shutout (with a little help from Steve Welham) the real show was at the other end of the field.

Everyone has heard that old saying about April showers bringing us lots of flowers in the month of May. Well, it seems as if there would be a lot of flowers this season with the rain continuing over the three day weekend. The 27th Annual Joe Hartmann South Jersey Diamond Classic has had a very difficult time finding a weekend to complete the tournament. Again, with unfavorable weather predictions over the Memorial Day holiday, Washington Township hosted Millville in a quarterfinal game at Deptford High School.

The Vineland Tigersharks (under 11 boys traveling team) played the first game of the 12th Annual Tournament at 8 am on Saturday. Before game time, they sat through an emotional dedication ceremony to one of their teammates, Aaron Ploch. Aaron had passed away earlier in the season due to a viral infection that attacked his vital organs. The Tigersharks have dedicated this Spring 2000 season to his memory. Youth soccer players in South Jersey can remember the bright-eyed, energetic, young boy with a memorial plaque that Vineland Soccer Association placed at their Main Soccer Complex.

Another year has gone by for the annual long weekend of making plans for the Memorial Day holiday that includes fun, food, soccer...and rain. Families from up and down the East Coast included New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland and more were looking for that perfect weather to enjoy soccer. Well that didn't happen. But the weather didn't dampen the spirits of the participants of the Voorhees Soccer Association Memorial Weekend Tournament.

In a hard fought slugfest on May 26, 1951, Camden Catholic came out on top of Collingswood High 12-8. The victory was a historic one, for it enabled the "Irish" for the first time in their school's history, to finish a baseball season undefeated. Their 13-0 perfect record represented the school's most successful baseball year ever.
