South Jersey Cheerleading: Sunday, March 5, 2000
By Joanne Costantino
With routines performed to an assortment of music from the pop rock sounds of the Backstreet Boys, Latino music of Ricky Martin to the hip-hop sounds of 702 and the R&B of R Kelly, the American Cheer Invitational Championships were held at Rutgers University in Camden. The diversity of the music added to the nice selection of routines offered by the teams. As usual the Cheerleading Competition demonstrated the great work and discipline these clubs and teams put into their work.

Vineland's U-14 boys traveling soccer team opened its spring season by hosting Delran this past weekend, and came away with a 2 to 2 tie. Delran, which went undefeated in the fall and beat the Spectre 1 to 0 last year, took an early 2 to 0 lead. However, a late first half goal by Martino Lasalandra cut the Demons lead to 2 to 1 at the half.

On Sunday, I had the opportunity to observe the Powerlifting meet at St. Joseph's High School in Hammonton, NJ. What a treat, to see young people competing against themselves and schools from other areas. The determination and intensity filled a gym that had more than a few interested spectators. This is the first year I had the chance to attend, and let me tell you this meet is the real deal.

The Vineland Hurricanes traveled to Voorhees, NJ for the first game of the Spring traveling soccer season. Breezy, but sunny skies, temps around 55°, not bad for early March. The Canes started the match playing the Typhoons and the gusty winds in their face. Voorhees quickly pressured Vineland keeper Jeremey Chini, but could not score until 22 minutes into the contest. Vineland's Billy Redden was able to work the ball upfield to Saverio Brunnetti. Sal's crossing pass to Kerry Daplyn was ruled offside by the referee and thwarted the only serious threat by the Hurricanes in the first half. The Vineland defense led by Mike Rigo, Dan Peretti, and Nick Ruskoski were able to turn away several Voorhees shots on goal.

Balanced scoring and a quick start allowed the Sterling Silver Knights to defeat the top seeded Haddon Heights Garnets, setting up another rematch with the rival Haddonfield Bulldogs for the Group 3 championship to be played on Monday. The old axiom that it's hard to beat a team three times in a season came true, with Sterling running out to a 17-4 lead at the beginning of the game. Ernest Turner scored 12 of his game high 28 points during the Knights' 1st quarter 25-15 run.

Kristen Stewart of Maple Shade is in her sophomore year at Rutgers University. She thrives on competition and couldn't make a choice to focus her talents on one sport, so she plays all her favorites. Since before her high school days, Kristen has played soccer, softball, and basketball. Her soccer career includes travel teams as well as high school, and now with Rutgers as a goalie. In softball she plays centerfield in an ASA league, and last but not least this diminutive young woman plays guard in basketball.

High School Girls Basketball: Wednesday, March 1, 2000
By Gregory "Graig" White
The buzz about St. John Vianney girl's basketball team did not prepare me for what I was about to see. The word was that the Lady Lancers were a smart, deep team that played basketball end to end. While watching this team perform, the one word that kept running through my head was relentless. These young ladies played the game end to end, at a pace that Camden Catholic's girls would have a tough time keeping up with.

When the basketball game ended on Tuesday at West Deptford High School, the Eagles advanced to the next round of the playoffs. They weren't too happy about the way they won, but it was a win. The Clearview Pioneers had traveled to West Deptford for the first round of the South Jersey Group 3 boy's basketball playoffs. But it was the Eagles who came away with a hard fought 60-53 win to advance to the quarterfinals against Moorestown.

The Cherokee Chiefs won their second consecutive JVB championship by defeating Washington Township 6-3 and finished the season 20-0. Shawn Zahaczewski led the Cherokee offense with three goals and an assist, Brandon Gould with a goal and two assists, and Dan Redner with two assists. Mike Duczkowski led Township with two goals. Township would score first as Duczkowski scored on a feed from Steve Overpeck and it was 1-0. That lead would only last two minutes as Cherokee converted on the power play to tie the score at 1-1 as Newt Wallen was set-up by Zahaczewski and Gould.
