Local softball players Mindy Coxe (Gloucester City - Gloucester H.S.), Kasey Mason (Brooklawn - Gloucester H.S.) and Megan Farrell (Medford - Bishop Eustace) helped lead their ASA Junior Olympic 14-U Fastpitch team, the Delaware Orange Crush, to claim the Delaware ASA State Championship.

In the beginning of the season, Smugglers 73 said that their only goal was to win the Championship of the All-Star Trophy League, and they did it. They not only were the Champions, but also did it with an impressive 28-0 undefeated season.

Event Spotlight: Saturday, July 24, 1999

It was a hazy, hot and humid morning at Cooper River Park for the Third Annual Bill Kile's Memorial Run. Over 75 people participated in the 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk, and over 150 runners lined up for the TAC-Certified 4-Mile Run. In the men's division, it was Eric Lorenz of Medford who came in with a time of 20:27, three seconds better than last year's winner, but still 21 seconds behind the course record set by Chuck Crabb in the race's first running in 1997. The women's division winner was Pam Gess of Somerdale, with a time of 25:21 which was 10th overall.

West Berlin led Laurel Springs 2 games to none coming into the third game of this best of five championship series. Both games so far have gone down to the wire, with scores of 8-7 and 19-18. And both teams would not disappoint, as this one would also go down to the wire, with West Berlin coming out ahead 10-9 and sweeping the Camden County Firefighters Softball League championship.

This year, girls from age 6 to 15 spent July 19-23 at Shawnee Cheerleading Camp. This was a six hour camp from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm held at Shawnee High School in Medford, NJ. Coaches Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Canale, senior varsity cheerleaders at Shawnee, and graduated Shawnee cheerleaders ran the camp.

It's not hard to find a lot of good programs throughout the city of Camden for kids of all ages to enjoy themselves and beat the heat. One camp you will find is the tennis program run by Gregory "Graig" White through Rutgers University-Camden. Mr. White has interesting ways to keep the game of tennis fun and alive for athletes young and old.

Game 2 of the Camden County Firefighters Softball League championship series was played under cloudly skies, with both players and fans wondering about the weather after a thunderstorm interrupted Game 1 on Monday. But the clouds would help keep the temperature down on this July evening, as it would be the bats that were hot as West Berlin came from behind to defeat Laurel Springs 19-18 to go up two games to none in this best of five series.

During the summer months throughout the area of South Jersey, the game of softball is played by many as their choice of recreation. You can find several leagues that take their softball seriously, especially in a championship game. That's where you will find West Berlin going up against Laurel Springs in the Camden County Firefighters Softball League championship series. It was West Berlin who held off a late charge by their opponents to take the first game, 8-7 at Luke Avenue Sports Complex.
