South Jersey Baseball History: Sunday, May 23, 1999
By Charlie Schick
Over the years there have been hundreds of batting champions, as well as, home run and RBI kings that have been crowned throughout baseball history. But when it comes to accomplishing the Triple Crown (leading your respective league in batting average, home runs, and RBI's) that's another story. In fact, since the beginning of the 20th century, major league baseball has experienced a Triple Crown winner only 14 times. Even more limiting is the fact that only 12 major league players have ever claimed the award in that time period, since two Hall of Fame members Roger Hornsby, and Ted Williams have turned the rarest of baseball's offensive honors.twice.

In a game where two teams were matching each other run for run, someone had to break the trend. The Riverside Rams hosted the Glassboro Bulldogs in a South Jersey Group 1 second round playoff game at Hooker Field. The Rams had a first round bye while Glassboro defeated Pt. Pleasant Boro to advance to this second round meeting. Riverside would finally break a five all deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning to advance to the next round against Pitman.

The quest has begun for the Cherry Hill East boy's volleyball team to repeat as state champions. Oh yeah, there are a few good teams that stand in their way, but today the Cougars took one step closer in capturing their 4th straight state championship. Fair Lawn came into town and left disappointed as East cruised to a 15-6, 15-6 victory in a NJSIAA playoff match. Setter Dan Chung was able to dish out sets that allowed East to put away for the kill.
