High School Volleyball: Tuesday, May 18, 1999
By Jack Tsikitas Six teams from South Jersey qualified for this year's NJSIAA state tournament. They are: Cherry Hill East (#4), Cherry Hill West (#10), Eastern (#12), Washington Township (#16), Woodrow Wilson (#17) and Collingswood (#23). Cherry Hill East, the defending three time state champion, gets a first round bye by virtue of their seeding (#4) in a field of 23 teams. Cherry Hill West at #10 was matched up against #23 Collingswood in the first round and won its match in three close games yesterday to proceed to the field of 16. West travels to Jersey City next to compete against #7 seeded St. Peter's on Thursday (5/20). For those interested, the match is slated for a 4:00 PM start. The Vikings of Eastern will host #21 seeded Old Bridge in Voorhees this afternoon at 4:30 PM. The winner of that match will travel to West New York to compete against the #5 seed, Memorial. Also on tap for this afternoon, Washington Township at #16 hosts Woodrow Wilson (seeded #17) at 4:00 PM. The winner of this match will face the top seeded team in the state, East Brunswick. Finally, on Wednesday (5/19), Cherry Hill East will host the winner of the Fairlawn (#13) vs. Emerson (#20) match at 4:30 PM. Should Eastern get beyond its first two opponents AND Cherry Hill East advances to the quarter finals, we could see two South Jersey teams in the quarter finals for the first time in the 5 year existence of the NJSIAA tournament. That match would be at Cherry Hill East either Monday or Tuesday afternoon of next week. Mark your calendars! FACT #1: In the six year existence of the South Jersey High School Volleyball League, Cherry Hill East has never lost to a South Jersey team. FACT #2: Cherry Hill East is in a position to go for an unprecedented fourth NJ State title in a row.
