High School Baseball: Saturday, May 22, 1999
By Charlie Barker Junior Kevin Galvin, who had pitched only three innings during the season, came on to get the last six outs of the game with a two-strikeout, no-hit relief to win the Diamond Classic championship for Bishop Eustace over Shawnee, 9-7. This victory, played at Union Field in West Deptford, help sooth a loss on Friday to Red Bank Catholic, which knocked Eustace out of the NJSIAA playoffs. Galvin came in to relieve starter Dan McKenna in the sixth after Shawnee's Bill McCollum hit a leadoff home run to bring the Renegades to within one with the score 8-7. This followed a strange play for Shawnee from the previous inning, when, with the bases loaded and two outs, batter Mike Connelly was hit by a pitch but was called out when home plate umpire Dave Borton judged that he did not attempt to get out of the way. The Crusader's Nick Italiano went 3 for 5 with an RBI, Steve Calamito was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI's, and Tom Cuneo was 2 for 3 with a walk, a triple and a double. For the Renegades, Owen Boles was 2 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBI's, and McCollum was 2 for 4 with the home run and 2 RBI's. On Friday, the Crusaders had defeated Vineland 9-6 at Washington Township to advance to the championship game. The Renagades played their semifinal game at Deptford where they defeated Cherry Hill East 13-7 after falling behind 7-0 in the first inning. Photos by Forrest Robleto
