South Jersey Baseball History: Sunday, May 16, 1999
By Mike Costantino
When my editor asked me if I would interview Charlie Schick, a baseball enthusiast who has lived and breathed South Jersey baseball for over thirty years, having never heard of Charlie Schick before I was not sure what to expect. What I found was a guy who not only can tell you that it was a South Jersey resident that scored the first run ever scored in the National League but also tell you who was the leading hitter on Shawnee's 1985 baseball team.

The quarterfinals of the Diamond Classic on Saturday at Deptford High School looked like one of those classic playoff games where every game schedule was a good one. First on tap were the Lenape Indians hosting the Cherry Hill East Cougars. Lenape had an easy time against Holy Spirit in the first round while East battled Cherry Hill West to advance. Well, the battle continued against the Indians as Cherry Hill broke a close game open to capture a 19-7 victory to advance.

On Tuesday, May 11th, the grudge game was played as Berlin Township Team #2 took on Berlin Township Team #1. In the first meeting Team #2 won by one run, but this game was not even close. Team #1, led by J. Bloom and A. Jarrell, hit the ball all over the field. They scored a lot of runs and did not look back. For Team #2, S. Immendorf, M. Foster and M. Williams played well.

Edgewood's boys track team is battling for the conference championship. After a disappointingly close loss to Overbrook on May 5th, the team is one win away from a three way tie. There is only one thing that stands in the way of the guys in green: Highland High School. Because Highland is undefeated and both Edgewood and Overbrook have one loss, a loss by Highland would set up the three way tie. Edgewood will have to rely on every single one of its team members. The runners, jumpers, and throwers will certainly have to be at their best to top Highland.

"I just want to tone up. How can I get my abs tighter? Once I lose these 10 pounds, I'll be happy." Being in the fitness business, I've heard lots of people say things like that. People spend lots of time worrying about the physical shape of their bodies. People are so preoccupied with youth and their flawed views about beauty.
