As we approach the month of May, teams are beginning to identify themselves as being labeled as having a chance at the title. Two of those teams amongst the top of the Colonial Conference were the Silver Knights from Sterling and the Garnets from Haddon Heights. Sterling’s starting pitcher Paige Cauley helped her own cause by belting a two run homerun in the first inning only to see Haddon Heights tie this game two innings later. It took a four run inning to finally put this game away for Sterling as they defeated Haddon Heights by a 6-2 margin.
Audubon, Sterling and Haddon Heights are amongst the top of the always competitive conference, each looking to return to the South Jersey Group 2 playoffs. Last year, the Lady Knights were that team that defeated Haddon Heights during the quarterfinals by a run and eventually on their way to capture the group title. This year wouldn’t be any different as these two teams met for the first time this season.
After Sterling quickly jumped out to an early lead, the Lady Garnets did not give up. Finally during the third inning, Haddon Heights pushed two runs across the plate to tie the game. Heights had a couple of chances to take the lead, but Cauley’s success on the mound and the defense playing behind her eliminated those threats. Alexa Anicola’s single during the top half of the sixth inning scored two giving Sterling the lead for good.
