South Jersey Baseball History: First Parochial 'A' and 'B' State Championships Friday, July 21, 2000 By Charlie Schick First Parochial 'B' State Championship - 1972 As in the previous two state baseball crowns won by South Jersey high schools, outstanding pitching was behind Bishop Eustace Prep's New Jersey State Parochial B championship 3 to 1 win over Pope Pius XII of Passaic. This time around it was senior redhead Dan Boyer who came forward to lead his South Jersey teammates to the state's highest honor. |
Event Spotlight: Two Firsts, Visiting Yankee Stadium and a Phillies Win Monday, July 10, 2000 By Mike Costantino Having been to Wrigley field and Camden yards a few times, the opportunity to take in a game at historic Yankee stadium and watch our beloved (or is it beleaguered) Phils play seemed to be the perfect reason to take a day off from work. Add in a morning round of golf and you have my definition of a perfect day. Making the trek up the turnpike is a boring ride and takes about two hours, depending on traffic and going into New York around 5:00 PM there is always congestion. |
South Jersey Baseball History: Dateline: July Sunday, July 3, 2000 By Charlie Schick Dateline is a diary of South Jersey baseball that highlights area players, games, events, and outstanding accomplishments in the past history of the great game of baseball. The June dates and facts listed below are taken from the manuscript entitled "A Day's Walk Through South Jersey Baseball." |
High School Baseball: Saturday, June 10, 2000 By Art Redd Toms River North was the scene for the Parochial A state championship game where Seton Hall Prep were hosting the Gloucester Catholic Rams. Things literally heated up as the players were forced to play in temperatures in the high nineties during this title game. Starting pitcher Mark Michael used his arm and his bat to help his team to a convincing win. During the 13-4 romp over the Pirates, Gloucester Catholic pounded out eighteen hits including a two-run homerun by Michael. |

South Jersey Baseball History: St. Joe Pitcher Almost Averages 2 Strikeouts Per Inning - 1962 Friday, June 2, 2000 By Charlie Schick Throughout baseball history, there have been a number of great strikeout pitchers, but few if any, have ever averaged two strikeouts per innings pitched over an entire season. So when St. Joseph High of Hammonton ace Sal Ingemi's 1962 totals were finally calculated, he immediately established himself a place in the South Jersey baseball record books. Rightly so, because the big southpaw with the blazing fastball and crackling curve had just accomplished a feat that no area hurler had ever done. He ended up averaging 1.98 strikeouts per inning in his senior season. |
High School Baseball: Friday, June 2, 2000 By Vincent Lewis The finals for the South Jersey Group 1 playoffs came down to two teams. The Pitman Panthers were going up against the Riverside Rams at Pennsauken High School for the championship. Riverside, familiar with being in the Group 1 finals, was looking for another trophy to add to their school's trophy cabinet. But the Panthers had other plans as they stunned the Rams in convincing fashion with a 13-1 victory. |
High School Baseball: Sunday, May 28, 2000 By Art Redd Finally, the championship game for the 2000 South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association Diamond Classic Tournament was played. The familiar home of the tournament, Union Field in West Deptford, saw the Cherokee Chiefs hosting the Gloucester Catholic Rams. Brad Reed highlighted the eight run third inning with a grand slam, as Gloucester Catholic cruised to the 16-5 Classic victory. |
High School Baseball: Saturday, May 27, 2000 By Art Redd Everyone has heard that old saying about April showers bringing us lots of flowers in the month of May. Well, it seems as if there would be a lot of flowers this season with the rain continuing over the three day weekend. The 27th Annual Joe Hartmann South Jersey Diamond Classic has had a very difficult time finding a weekend to complete the tournament. Again, with unfavorable weather predictions over the Memorial Day holiday, Washington Township hosted Millville in a quarterfinal game at Deptford High School. |
South Jersey Baseball History: Camden Catholic's First Undefeated Team - 1951 Friday, May 26, 2000 By Charlie Schick In a hard fought slugfest on May 26, 1951, Camden Catholic came out on top of Collingswood High 12-8. The victory was a historic one, for it enabled the "Irish" for the first time in their school's history, to finish a baseball season undefeated. Their 13-0 perfect record represented the school's most successful baseball year ever. |
South Jersey Baseball History: Sunday, May 7, 2000 By Charlie Schick Dateline is a diary of South Jersey baseball that highlights area players, games, events, and outstanding accomplishments in the past history of the great game of baseball. The May dates and facts listed below are taken from the manuscript entitled "A Day's Walk Through South Jersey Baseball." |
High School Baseball: Tuesday, May 2, 2000 By Bob Stewart After coming off a tough loss to Washington Township, the Cherokee baseball team pounded out 4 home runs against a deflated Edgewood pitching staff. The wind was blowing out to left in this game. Cherokee scored 9 runs in the first two innings, seven of which were scored on Phil D'Alonzo's first two plate appearances. He hit a 3 run monster home run in the first and a grand slam in the second inning. |
South Jersey Baseball History: Third High School Perfect Game Pitched - 1964 Tuesday, April 25, 2000 By Charlie Schick On Saturday April 25, 1964, Edgewood High's Les Fulleylove joined Fran Dale, Holy Spirit (1945), and John Buyarski, St. James (1952) as the only pitchers to ever author a scholastic baseball perfect game when he pitched his teammates to a 1-0 victory over West Deptford High. The lean southpaw with excellent control allowed only two batters to even hit the ball, as he recorded 19 strikeouts of the seven inning game's 21 outs. |
South Jersey Baseball History: The Dominant Pitchers Monday, April 24, 2000 By Charlie Schick When one looks for the best of the great major league pitchers with the most season victories, they have to go all the way back to the early part of the century. In fact, it was 1904 when New York Yankee Hall of Fame right-hander Jack Chesbro won 41 games to set the all-time major league single season wins mark. Chesbro started 51 games that year, and relieved in 4, as he appeared in a total of 55 games. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, April 13, 2000 By Boog Williams Pennsauken traveled to Edgewood on the 13th for an Olympic Conference baseball game. With the cold breeze blowing in from left, you knew that no balls were going to be hit out of the park. If you never played at Edgewood, the wind blows across the open field a lot, and when it is cold, you feel it. |
South Jersey Baseball History: Monday, April 10, 2000 By Charlie Schick With the coming of the 20th century, the bitter battle between the major leagues, American and National, was finally settled, and baseball, once again, could get down to the business of trying to win the hearts of America's young and old alike. And they did just that, as the infant American League expanded major league baseball to numerous new cities, and attendance plus fan interest reached all time highs. |
South Jersey Baseball History: Sunday, April 2, 2000 By Charlie Schick Dateline is a diary of South Jersey baseball that highlights area players, games, events, and outstanding accomplishments in the past history of the great game of baseball. High School Baseball: Saturday, April 1, 2000 By Art Redd The year 2000 high school baseball began on Saturday morning with teams trying to get an early start on a successful season. The Washington Township Minutemen traveled to Highland High School and wanted to get their first win on the road. Township rolled all over Highland by scoring early and often to post a 15-5 win in a non-league game. |
