High School Baseball: Thursday, April 13, 2000
By Boog Williams Pennsauken traveled to Edgewood on the 13th for an Olympic Conference baseball game. With the cold breeze blowing in from left, you knew that no balls were going to be hit out of the park. If you never played at Edgewood, the wind blows across the open field a lot, and when it is cold, you feel it. In the top of the first, Pennsauken's Smith grounded out to Edgewood's second baseman Jancay for the first out. Gomez singled to right off of Edgewood's starter Heritage. Hennessey popped up to second for the second out of the inning. Kamulda hit a dribbler back to the mound, as Heritage threw to Lee for the third out. In the bottom of the inning, Pennsauken's pitcher Hennessey had a 1-2-3 inning, as Edgewood's Jancay flied out to right, Rosetti hit a shot to short and was thrown out at first on a nice fielding play by Mennel. The third out came on a pop fly to right, ending the inning with no scoring by both teams. In the second, with 2 on, Edgewood's pitcher Heritage came up with a big K to end the inning scoreless. In the bottom of the inning, Edgewood scored the first run of the game. Muckley singled, then went to second on a pass ball and then to third on a wild pitch. Pennsauken's pitcher Hennessey, K'ed the next batter. With one out, Edgewood's Nardello grounded out to short for the second out, but also got an RBI. Hennessey K'ed the next batter. After 2 innings, Edgewood took a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Pennsauken lined out to left, got on base by an error by Edgewood's shortstop Johnson, and stole second. The inning ended on a fly out to left that died in the wind and a ground out back to the mound. In the bottom of the inning, Edgewood grounded out to short, then grounded out to second, on a great diving grab by Pennsauken's Drago, then grounded out to first. The big inning for Pennsauken was the fourth inning. It started off with a walk to Clark. Santaspirt was hit with the throw as he hustled to beat the throw to first, and Clark went to third. Santaspirt stole second, and with a high throw, Clark trotted home with the tying run. With a man on second, Pennsauken bunted him over to third and then bunted him home to take the lead. The next batter was walked and Edgewood made a pitching change. An error by Edgewood's third baseman Tolomeo put runners on first and second. Pennsauken went for the double steal and Edgewood threw to third, but the ball bounced into left field as the run scored. The runner from first ended up at third. The next batter walked, then stole second. The inning ended with Edgewood's #4 getting a K. Pennsauken scored 3 to take the lead 3-1. In the bottom of the inning, Edgewood started off with a single to left and then a walk. With runners on first and second, with no outs, it looked like Edgewood was going to have a big inning. The next batter grounded out to short, on what was a close play at first. The runners moved up to second and third. Then Pennsauken's Pitcher Hennessey settled down as he K'ed the next two batters and ended Edgewood's rally in the bottom of the inning. The game ended with the score Pennsauken 4 - Edgewood 2.
