High School Softball: Gloucester Finds another Way to Win Saturday, April 14, 2007
By Susan Hall
The Lady Lions from Gloucester has the luxury of two very good starting pitchers
on their team. Both Jill Stafford and Sam Dobleman have been perfect on the mound
keeping opposing batters off balanced. In this game, Dobleman would get another
start and was looking to extend Gloucester's unbeaten streak to six games. The Lady
Cougars from Schalick and Gloucester would not score a run until the bottom of the
fifth inning when Kelsey Cutler connected on a two run homerun. Schalick would get
one of those runs back to pull within a run. Dobleman would take care of things
during the final inning and preserve Gloucester's 2-1 victory. |
High School Lacrosse: Eastern's Defense Dominates Divisional Match-up Saturday, April 14, 2007
By George Brookings
With a new season of boys' lacrosse underway, based on personal opinions one team
has to be selected as the best in our area. And with that much attention now on
that team, opposing squads will either use that ranking of a team as a motivating
factor to see how well they can compete them as well as other teams or just intimidated.
But don't be fooled, the reason for the Vikings from Eastern High School is successful
is because of their defense. By limiting your opponent's scoring chances will only
keep your offense in the game no matter what the score maybe. In an Olympic Conference
American Division game played at Eastern, the Minutemen from Washington Township
scored the first goal just seconds into the game. The Vikings would respond by scoring
six unanswered goals during the first half and then dominated the second half to
pick up the 15-5 victory extending their winning streak to four games. |

High School Softball: Audubon Scores Only Run and Stops West Deptford Friday, April 13, 2007
By Susan Hall
The Lady Eagles from West Deptford have been an on row starting out their new softball
season. By winning their first three games, they have remained amongst the leaders
of the Colonial Conference. Also representing the same competitive conference, Audubon
dropped their season opener and was looking to win their second game in a row against
another undefeated team. West Deptford's Michele Black has been successful keeping
their opponents from generating runs and she would continue to do so today. Audubon
would score only one run in this game but that was enough for Lauren Beckas to pitch
seven scoreless innings for the Green Wave. Audubon's defense came up with some
nice plays to preserve their 1-0 victory. |

By Brian Smith
Pierre Parenteau scored and posted two assists and Corey Crawford made 37 saves
to lead the Norfolk Admirals to a 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Phantoms on Friday
night at the Wachovia Spectrum. The loss dampened the first professional goal for
Flyers 2006 first-round draft pick Claude Giroux, who scored for the Phantoms along
with Mark Cullen and Jared Ross. Norfolk started the scoring at 8:12 of the first
period when Parenteau scored off assists from Martin St. Pierre and Cam Barker.
But the Phantoms responded just 16 seconds later on Ross's 11th of the year. He
knocked a puck away from an Admirals defender in the Norfolk slot and flicked it

High School Lacrosse: Moorestown's Second Half Surge Not Enough against Ridgewood Wednesday, April 11, 2007
By Jerome Michaels
The boys' lacrosse team from Moorestown have their work cut out for them as their
schedule has them competing against some of the top ranked teams in New Jersey.
That's doesn't stop the Quakers from working hard to prove they belong in the group
of elite teams. Ridgewood has been labeled as one of the top five teams and their
early success showed why. Moorestown dug themselves a five goal deficit during the
first half only to battle back right before the half. But Ridgewood's offensive
attack picked up during the second half and posted a 14-7 win over the Quakers. |
High School Baseball: Rams Rally on Umba's Homerun Wednesday, April 11, 2007
By Clark Washington
It's a situation that most baseball players put themselves in and that is to come
up to the plate with a chance to win the game for your team. When the Red Devils
from Penns Grove held a one run lead at the start of the bottom of the sixth inning,
Gloucester Catholic would get two runners on base with Matt Umba looking to pick
up another key hit to drive in another run. This time, Umba nailed a three run homerun
for the Rams to re-take the lead. Gloucester Catholic would give up a run during
the seventh inning but they would come away with a 5-4 victory and pick up their
third win of the season. |

It's not easy waiting around for something to happen and you have no control over
it. Take for instance the Lancers from Holy Cross boys' lacrosse team. Finally getting
a chance to play, they still had to wait for the junior varsity to finish their
game. By the time the Lancers took the field against West Deptford, this game swung
quickly in favor of the home team. Holy Cross jumped out to a five goal lead at
halftime and continued to dominate their opponent behind Paul Colflesh and Sean
Neary three goal performance. The Lancers would start off the season with a 12-4
victory. |

High School Softball: Maiese Continues to Impress as Minutemaids Win Again Monday, April 9, 2007
By Joyce Sagerty
Spring is that time of the year that most people look forward to with the warm temperatures
and sunny skies allowing them to enjoy all of the outdoor sporting events. So far
the weather is not cooperating with the season, but that's not stopping Washington
Township from heating up the base paths. The cooler temperatures might have slowed
down a few teams from picking up those wins during the first week of the season,
but the Minutemaids have been able to provide run support for starting pitcher Alyssa
Maiese. So far this season, Maiese has not given up a single run and was looking
to continue that streak at Camden Catholic. Washington Township broke open a close
game during the late innings and was able to pick up a 6-0 win over the Fighting
Irish. |
