Soccer Spotlight: Saturday, April 3, 2004 By David Deal The Philadelphia KiXX (20-16) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Cleveland Force in front of 4,876 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum tonight. KiXX captain Kevin Sloan registered the game winner at 12:11 of the third quarter. Peter Pappas (24-11) earned the victory between the posts for Philadelphia, stopping 19 of the 22 shots he faced, while Otto Orf fell to 2-8 with eight saves on 13 chances for the Force. |
High School Softball: Thursday, April 1, 2004 By Susan Hall Opening day finally arrived for the Red Devils from Rancocas Valley and the Indians from Lenape. Knowing they were the focal point for their softball team, the starting pitchers for both squads were able to stand on the mound and execute the game plan set out. On this day, Lisa Sweeney was in complete control of her pitches striking out 14 batters. Rancocas Valley jumped out to a three run lead and finished the game with a 3-1 victory. Katie Mastoris tacked on the extra run with a solo homerun in the fourth inning. |

High School Baseball: Monday, March 29, 2004 By Vincent Lewis Grounds crew all over the country are preparing for what most still consider American's favorite past-time. The area ball fields in sand lots, public parks, high school grounds and stadiums are all getting a face lift preparing the playing field for the sport of baseball. With the Phillies really excited about playing on real grass, high school players all over our area are only use to the blades of grass. Maybe the local high school's playing surface is not as good as what's preserved at Citizens Bank Park, but its grass. Getting an early start on getting a few swings in against an opponent instead of practice, Cherokee and Vineland participated in a scrimmage before the season begins on this Thursday. |
College Golf: Monday, March 29, 2004 By Mike Ballard The Rutgers-Camden golf team made school history at the Susquehanna University Tee-Off Invitational March 25, shooting the lowest score in program history, a 312. The Scarlet Raptors also placed a school-record four golfers in the 70’s, as junior Hugh Arbuthnot (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and freshman Chris Kelley (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) each shot a 77, while junior Brian Baskin (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and sophomore John Goff (Haddon Heights, NJ/Paul VI) both recorded a 79. Senior Ryan Cusick (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) rounded out the team scoring with an 88. The Raptors’ alternates, freshman Rob Burgess (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and junior Spencer Moore (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lanape), shot an 87 and an 89, respectively. |
Tennis Spotlight: Monday, March 29, 2004 By Bob Heller The USP men's tennis team opened a stretch of three matches in three days with another win yesterday, defeating Widener University 6-1 to remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0. The Devils took five of the six singles matches to seal the win early. Ryan Pell (Fr., West York Area HS/York, PA) won his first singles match of the season, defeating Brad Lutz 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 at #1 singles. |
