High School Basketball: Saturday, January 10, 2004 By Susan Hall It was quite evident when both of these teams lined up for the opening tip-off that each team possessed a dominating center. Willingboro’s Crystal Langhorne and Holy Cross’ Danielle Hall were both list over six feet tall and it was a known fact that both could take over a game by themselves. The Chimeras team effort would widen a slim first quarter lead when the defense forced Holy Cross to turn the ball over. Willingboro finished the game with four players finishing with double-digit points in route to their Burlington County League 88-51 victory. Lateisha Wade led all scorers with a game high 29 point for the Lady Chimeras. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Saturday, January 10, 2004 By Al Cohen In the highly anticipated rematch between Philadelphia and the Binghamton Senators, Neil Little made 26 saves tonight to lead the Phantoms to a 2-1 victory at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The last time the Phantoms and Senators met on Dec. 28, the teams combined for 373 penalty minutes, 11 fights and 15 game misconducts in a 5-1 Binghamton win. Three Philadelphia players received suspensions from that game, including Little. After serving his two-game suspension and backing up Antero Niittymaki the last two games, Little returned to the ice tonight and only allowed a power-play goal by Chris Kelly in the second period. The 32-year-old stopped all 13 shots he faced in the third to win for the ninth time in his last 11 decisions. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, January 9, 2004 By Mike Costantino Tom Ruiz scored two goals late in the third period as Williamstown rallied from a 2-0 deficit and defeated Clearview 3-2 in Tier 1 action played at Hollydell. Freshman goalie Joshua Haines was outstanding in nets and it was his play in the first 2 periods that enabled Williamstown to stay in the game. Mike Sullivan scored the only goal of the first period as he skated around the net and came out in front after Haines made the initial save. Sullivan banged home his own rebound. Williamstown started slow offensively and did not register its first shot on goal until midway through the period. Haines later robbed Jim Sprinkle and Sullivan again on close-in opportunities. Early in the second period, Sprinkle broke down the right side and with Sullivan trailing, dropped a pass that Sullivan one-timed to Matt Gagne along the side of the net and he re-directed the pass into the goal for a 2-0 lead. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, January 9, 2004 By Mike Costantino Chris Keyser’s second goal of the game with less than four minutes remaining snapped a 4-4 tie as Washington Township defeated Cherry Hill East 5-4 at Hollydell in the first game for Township after the holiday break. Billy Choy added a goal and three assists and Fred Brewer added a goal and two assists. Reid Hlavka led the East attack with two goals. The first period was scoreless thanks in large part to Township goaltender Derek Anderson, who was tested on two odd-man rushes and one turnover in front of his own net. Choy opened the scoring as Keyser from the corner, fed him a perfect pass, that Choy just had to chip it in giving Township a 1-0 lead. Andrew Roth tied the game at 1-1 for East as he ripped a shot through a screen with about four minutes left in the second period. Township responded about one minute later, just as the first goal, except Choy, from the corner, fed Keyser and he put Township up 2-1. Then Matt Grossi put home a rebound of a shot by Choy in the period’s final seconds and Township led 3-1 heading into the last period. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Friday, January 9, 2004 By Al Cohen Kirby Law scored the tying goal with four seconds left in regulation and John Slaney tallied the game-winner 3:43 into overtime as the Philadelphia Phantoms rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Springfield Falcons tonight at the Springfield Civic Center. Philadelphia trailed 2-1 after two periods and came up empty on three power plays over the first 15 minutes of the third. The Phantoms then killed a hooking minor on Craig Berube before pulling goaltender Antero Niittymaki for a sixth attacker with 77 seconds left. Defenseman Jim Vandermeer stole a pass to set up a final scramble in front of the Falcons net and Law wound up batting the puck in at 19:56 to force the extra session. Former Falcon Boyd Kane and Mike Peluso received assists on Law's 16th goal. |
High School Basketball: Wednesday, January 7, 2004 By Jerome Michaels The Mustangs from Triton didn’t waste any time taking control of a game that they were supposed to win. They would have a very rough start of their season as they were faced with Lenape, Winslow Township, Deptford and Paulsboro during their first four games. Bruce Rice would lead the charge for Triton as they held the Warriors to just 13 first half points. The Mustangs would cruise to their first victory of the season by outscoring their opponent by a 73-42 margin. |
Ice Hockey Spotlight: Wednesday, January 7, 2004 By Al Cohen Rookie Nick Deschenes scored the game-winning goal at 9:15 of the third period as the Philadelphia Phantoms posted a 3-2 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs tonight at the Wachovia Spectrum. Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead into the final period before Hamilton's Chris Higgins knotted the score just 59 seconds into the third. But with 10:45 to play in the game, Kirby Law got off a shot from the near circle and Deschenes was there to knock in the rebound for the game-winner. Fellow rookie Freddy Meyer also assisted on Deschenes' third goal of the year. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, January 6, 2004 By Jerome Michaels When two teams in search of a much need victory get together on the basketball court, both teams are highly motivated into doing whatever it takes to pick up the win. Gateway’s Samahd Lee demonstrated his confidence on the court taking control of the game after coming off the bench. The Greenwave from Audubon boy’s basketball team were hosting this Colonial Conference game and were looking for their first win of the season. Dealing with Lee didn’t seem to be a problem at first, but at the end of the game, Audubon had no answer. The Gators will now look to extend their winning ways after their 61-53 road victory. |
High School Basketball: Monday, January 5, 2004 By Susan Hall Last year, the Villagers girl’s basketball team from Our Lady of Mercy Academy had a tough season. The team had won a total of three games and was looking not to repeat that way of play. Today, the Villagers had a chance to surpass last year’s win total just five games into their young season. The Lady Villagers were playing host to Moorestown Friends who was looking for their first win of the season. Mary Lorenz was able to lead Old Lady of Mercy Academy’s charge during the second quarter to turn a one-point deficit into a twelve-point halftime lead. The Villagers would go on to the 45-26 victory behind Lorenz’s game high twelve points. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, January 5, 2004 By Mike Costantino Cherokee defeated Cinnaminson 5-1 in Tier 1 action at the Skate Zone despite the efforts of Cinnaminson goalkeeper Kevin Kloss. Louis Sarcone led the Cherokee attack with two goals, Anthony Casale scored the lone Cinnaminson goal. Cherokee controlled the play for most of the first period, launching 18 shots but could only beat Kloss twice. First Pat McMahon scored to make it 1-0 with just over six minutes left in the period and Sarcone tallied just over one minute later to put Cherokee up 2-0. Kloss made several saves from point blank range to keep his team close. Kevin Magnin scored a power play goal from the slot and Cherokee led 3-0, but that was the only goal of the period as Kloss stood tall in nets and Cinnaminson just needed to generate some offense as they were being out shot 28-9 after two periods. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, January 5, 2004 By Mike Costantino Balanced scoring has been the key to Eastern’s success this year and in their latest victory, a 7-1 win over Cherry Hill East, they had seven different players score. Sean Sullivan led the Vikings attack with a goal and two assists. Joey Johnston opened the scoring on the power play as he went end-to-end skating through the defense and scored from in close. Sullivan made it 2-0, also on the power play, as the Vikings spent most of the power play in the offensive end, with Brandon Tunstall and Anthony Orner working in the corners to keep the play alive. Tim Woods cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the second period, however Mike Kondrla won the center ice face-off and scored ten seconds later and Eastern led 3-1. |
High School Wrestling: Monday, January 5, 2004 By Anthony Phillips The mood from the crowd was very confusing during the pre-match warm-ups Monday afternoon at Cinnaminson High School. You would expect the visiting Chimeras from Willingboro to be a bit quiet, as they were about to face a good wrestling team on the road. So, when the Pirates took the mat during warm-ups there wasn’t much noise coming from the players or the crowd. Early season jitters? Maybe, but it didn’t take long for Cinnaminson to make a lot of noise on the scoreboard. The Pirates recorded four consecutive pins, six total, to easily erase an early deficit. The Pirates recorded their second victory in a row with their 66-9 triumph over Willingboro. |
