Event Spotlight: Sunday, April 6, 2003 By David W. Unkle What a difference a day makes. Coming into the weekend, Philadelphia needed to capture all six points to secure the Western Conference’s final playoff birth. An inspirational 2-1 overtime win Friday night was tarnished with last night’s 4-2 loss to the Hershey Bears. Yet the hockey gods appeared to be looking down on the Phantoms; Rochester’s 2-1 loss to Syracuse, gave the Phantoms one more opportunity to determine their playoff fate. |
Event Spotlight: Saturday, April 5, 2003 By Greg WileyPhiladelphia Charge Correspondent Melissa Moore made six saves for the Philadelphia Charge on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as her team lost to the San Jose CyberRays 1-0 at Spartan Stadium in the season opener for both teams. Katie Barnes scored the lone goal of the game and LaKeysia Beene made five saves for the CyberRays (1-0-0, 3pts), who handed the Charge (0-1-0) their first loss on opening day in three years. Beene now has four wins lifetime against the Charge and three shutouts, as San Jose also improved to 4-0 at home and 4-1-2 overall against the Charge all-time. |
Event Spotlight: Friday, April 4, 2003 By David W. Unkle Discipline. Focus. Commitment. Playoff bound teams demonstrate these attributes throughout the season; teams that don’t, pull out the stockpile of sports clichés and talk about a better next season. For the Philadelphia Phantoms, next season is this season. And they have two games left to prove that the first eighty wasn’t for naught. |
High School Softball: Friday, April 4, 2003 By Susan Hall It sure did not feel like its time for softball, let alone any spring sports with the temperatures pushing close to the freezing point. When your team is winning games, sometimes it does not matter how cold it is. Audubon has been the team keeping warm, as they have won their first 3 games this season. The Green Wave scored some late insurance runs to defeat Gateway 6-0 in a Colonial Conference game. |
Event Spotlight: Friday, April 4, 2003 By Greg WileyPhiladelphia Charge Correspondent The Philadelphia Charge announced today the postponement of the scheduled home-opener giveaway of the Kelly Smith Figurine Bank courtesy of Beneficial Savings Bank. The postponement is due to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) breakout in China that has forced the closure of the plant where the figurines were being produced. |
High School Girls Lacrosse: Thursday, April 3, 2003 By Gary Steiner It's a good thing that lacrosse players must have numbers on their jerseys, otherwise you would not have been able to tell Whitney (#18) and Hillary (#9) Richards apart on the field. The two Holy Cross juniors showed a balance of scoring, assists, and defense in helping the Lady Lancers defeat Cherokee for the first time in their lacrosse history. Senior Kristin Zucconi led all scoring with 5 goals in the 13-8 win. But the 13-8 final score doesn't begin to show how intense was the offensive pressure of the Lady Lancers. |
High School Boys Lacrosse: Thursday, April 3, 2003 By Clark Washington It was a game that was mainly considered a sport played by one gender throughout South Jersey, but this season the boys have formed new teams representing the Olympic Conference. Cherokee and Vineland were two of those new teams from the newly formed American Division battling it out on the field. It will take some time before the boy’s portion of the sport will get some recognition, but it will continue to grow. Cherokee dominated the play against Vineland by posting a 14-2 win. |
High School Baseball: Wednesday, April 2, 2003 By Vincent Lewis It was an inning that Audubon wanted to forget, but one to remember for the Panthers baseball team from Collingswood High School. Trailing by a run after the first inning, Collingswood’s bats came alive breaking open their Colonial Conference game against last year’s South Jersey Group 2 champions. The Panthers scored nine runs in the second inning and then eight more runs to end this game early. Both Roy DiLiberto and Chris Brown hammered three run homeruns to highlight Collingswood’s 20-8 victory against Audubon. |
