Steve Marshall had two goals and Steve Schmidt had a goal and two assists to steer the Sterling Knights by Clearview 5-3 in SJHSIHL JVA playoff action at Hollydell on Sunday night. The game started off with both teams taking more penalties than slap shots. With the teams skating three-a-side, Marshall, on a pass from Schmidt, scored on a breakaway to give the Knights the 1-0 lead. After winning the ensuing face-off, Marshall crossed the blue line and blasted a shot that found the back of the net, and just like that it was 2-0.

Nick Martorano had a goal and two assists to lead Washington Township over Eastern 3-1 in SJHSIHL JVA playoff action last night at Hollydell. The real story however was the outstanding play of Eastern goalie Kyle Bradshaw, as he stopped 41 shots many point blank and kept the game scoreless until the third period. Township's best scoring chance in the opening period was by Mike Smetaniuk as he skated through the slot and ripped a shot ticketed for the corner. But Bradshaw made a great glove save and despite being out-shot 15-3, the period ended scoreless.

Cinnaminson, led by the outstanding play of goalie Scott Gideon, gave unbeaten Washington Township all it could handle and then some. Township needed two goals in the third period to defeat Cinnaminson 4-2 in the first game of the best of three in the SJHSIHL semi-finals. Bill Verdecchio gave Township the 1-0 lead as he rebounded a point shot by Chris Harrington with just over five minutes left in the first period.

Mike Gooch had three goals, Pat Sullivan and Dave Gooch each scored twice to lead Clearview over defending champion Eastern 11-4 in game one of the SJHSIHL semi-finals. You could not have scripted a better game plan as Clearview blanketed Eastern's top two players in Cianfrani and Becker, as every time they touched the puck they were either knocked off the puck or double and triple teamed. That strategy, along with Jarret Weisenbach, who was there to make a big save when needed and the special teams, were the keys for Clearview.

Just over four weeks ago, Eastern defeated the Washington Township wrestling team which gave them the confidence of capturing the South Jersey Group 4 title. On Thursday, Township removed that memory by convincingly defeating Eastern 41-24 at Eastern High School. Mike Lotierzo and Brian Brittingham each recorded pins for Washington Township to win the contest.

Repeating as champions is always a hard task to do. Knowing that everyone is trying to knock you off as previous champions makes it even harder. But don't tell that to the Sterling Knights. Pt. Pleasant Boro had a tough task travelling to Sterling in hopes of stealing the South Jersey Group 2 Title away from the Knights. After the final wrestlers had completed their match, Sterling were the ones capturing their second straight title 45-23.

South Jersey Basketball: Wednesday, February 16, 2000
PRESS RELEASE In 1980 Al Carino, the founder and longtime president of the Basketball Club of South Jersey, set the wheels in motion for the establishment of a South Jersey Hall of Fame. Carino's first step towards that goal was to call upon Doug Frambes, former Riverside High School coach and currently a sports writer at the Courier-Post, to form and chair a committee for this purpose.
Frambes formed a committee composed of Walt Burrows, Stan Mroz, George Pims, Dick Carpenter, Jack Harte, Al Mattern, Charlie Nash, Bill Thomas and Bob Viggiano. Initially, the committee met to set the ground rules and the format to be used in the selection process. In addition to selecting former outstanding coaches and players, the committee decided one inductee each year would be chosen for distinguished service to basketball in the area.

You didn't have to be a rocket scientist to predict that Clearview, Eastern and Washington Township would be three of the final four teams left in the SJHSIHL road to the final four. However, to predict that Cinnaminson would be the fourth team is somewhat of a surprise, as they finished sixth during the regular season but have been playing well lately and could give Township some problems. Here is a breakdown of each series, which, like the finals are a best of three:

The first day of the NJSIAA wrestling playoffs began today with the South Jersey Group 4 pairings held at Eastern High School. All anticipation of a Lenape versus Eastern rematch came true when the Indians got past Brick Memorial in the quarterfinal action. An early start by the Vikings was enough to hold down Lenape and spoil any hopes of Eastern losing twice to the Indians. Eastern will host the Group 4 finals against Washington Township on Thursday.

Sure, this was the day that cupid was shooting those arrows all across South Jersey with precision and accuracy. Marcus Bullock must have been hit with one of those arrows, because he was lovin' the three ball. Cherry Hill East had little problem dominating this Olympic Conference boy's basketball game by defeating Highland 68-39. This game was all Cougars from the opening tip off.

Defending League Champion Eastern pounded their way into the semifinals for the 5th straight year and romped Cherokee by an 11 to 4 score. Cherokee kept it close in the first period on goals by Tim Edwards and Steve Boianelli. The score was tied going into the second period 2-2. Eastern took control in the second period, however, and scored 3 straight goals before Edwards scored again to make the score 6 to 3 heading into the third.
