Winning Ways: Saturday, February 27, 1999

I titled this piece, "A Day in the Life...", to give you, the reader, a glimpse into what a day in the life of a conditioning coach is like. First, let me say that people often refer to me as a trainer. In the world of sports, there is a big difference between what trainers and coaches do. Athletic trainers are the people that work with athletes who have suffered an injury. Their focus is to work with the athlete on getting them back in their activity as quickly as possible, but also keeping in mind that the athlete must sufficiently heal so that re-injury does not happen. The conditioning coach works with well athletes; it is our job to make sure that athletes are as injury resistant as possible. Some people call me a trainer, and granted, some of our duties are very much alike, but we serve two different functions.

To have been able to predict that the four teams left in the battle for ice hockey supremacy in South Jersey would also be the top four teams from the regular season in Tier 1 wouldn't qualify you as an expert. The tough part is predicting who will advance to the finals and ultimately capture the crown. Will Eastern repeat or will Lenape finally capture the gold? Here is a breakdown of each series, remember that the semi's and finals are best of three:

At the honorary Bob Costello Gymnasium in Evesham, the high schools of Cherokee & Highland faced each other in the final game of the regular season. In a playoff tune up, the Highlanders looked in peak form with a 61-46 victory. As Cherokee prepares to face Shawnee in the opening round of the N.J.S.I.A.A. Group IV playoff, you can bet that Highland will be in the stands scouting. Highland will face the winner of the Chief/Renegade match-up.

With a week to go before the Cherokee Chiefs (12-9) and the Shawnee Renegades (17-5) face each other in the NJSIAA Group 4 playoff tournament, the packed house in the Medford gymnasium was privy to a sneak preview. And if tonight's contest was any indicator of what the next weeks action holds, then additional stands will have to be added. In this intensely played game, the Shawnee Renegades came out on top with a 63 to 40 victory.
