Finally, the Camden Catholic Fighting Irish wrestling team got past their nemesis St. Joseph Montvale to capture the Parochial "A" State Championship. This was the third year in a row that these two teams have met for the state title, with St. Joe's holding a 2-0 advantage. It was the Fighting Irish's turn to represent South Jersey and prove they could capture the title, and they did. Especially with the freshman sensation Bob Stinson (24-0) keeping his undefeated record intact, Camden Catholic went ahead with Stinson's pin with 1:26 into the match to highlight the meet. The Irish went on to defeat their opponent 35-27.

Exceeding the expectations of science, the Chiefs captured lightning in the battle for the second time in less than 24 hours at the honorary Bob Costello Gymnasium in Evesham. The Cherokee Chiefs (11-9) and the Woodrow Wilson Tigers (11-9) squared off against each other. Although both clubs posted identical records, the hotter-than-the-new Sports Illustrated-swimsuit-issue Chiefs edged the gamely Tigers by a 50-48 score in another wildly exciting game.

Whew! is the word that can best describe the game here at Evesham between the Cherokee Chiefs (10-9) and the #1 team in the Olympic American Conference, the Cherry Hill East Cougars (17-2). The Chiefs scored an upset of Godzilla-like proportions against the Cougars in a highly entertaining game.

Let the South Jersey Group wrestling playoffs begin, which it did at Sterling High School. The Group 2 quarterfinals and semi-finals were underway, in which the home team was predicted to advance to the finals. The Silver Knights, with their bye in the first round, had little problem dismantling their opponents to advance to the South Jersey Group 2 finals. After Woodstown gained an early lead and defeated Delran, they went up against Sterling in the semi-finals. Sterling claimed victories in the first 5 out of 6 matches to jump out to the early lead and defeat Woodstown 48-17.

The South Jersey Group 2 wrestling quarterfinals began with the Delran Bears going up against the Woodstown Wolverines Tuesday evening at Sterling High School. The winner would advance to the semifinals against top rated Sterling. Delran started out quickly taking an 11-0 advantage when Tom Prarie won on a technical fall over Warren Mabey (19-2), and Matt Vorineger won by forfeit in the 103 and 112 matches respectively. The Wolverines cruised through the next six matches to put away Delran early with a 38-35 victory. Coach Joe Frassenei rested his last 3 wrestlers to prepare them for the semifinal match.

In an opening round SJHSIHL playoff game played at the Coliseum on Tuesday night, the Lenape Indians shutout Collingswood 6-0. Led by Jeff Bagnoli's two goals and one by brother Gregg Bagnoli, the Indians move on to the second round. Collingswood seemed to have a good game plan as they played solid defense and took few chances offensively, but they still need to score goals. When they had the man advantage, they did not capitalize as they were 0-5 on the power play.

In an opening round playoff game at the Coliseum on Monday night, Holy Cross defeated Triton 5-3 as the SJHSIHL began its version of March Madness. After a scoreless first period in which the Lancers out-shot the Mustangs thirteen to four, Marino scored the first of his two goals on the night and Holy Cross had the 1-0 lead at the ten minute mark. Just over a minute later Phil Cordivari scored on a 2-1 break with the assist to Marino and the Lancers were up 2-0.
