High School Wrestling: Saturday, January 31, 1998
By Art Redd
Whenever two good teams get together to compete against each other, usually the parking lot is a sign that a good sporting event is about to happen. Let's take the wrestling match where Highland traveled to Camden Catholic. The parking lot was packed from front to back. And if you showed up late, you had to struggle to get a seat in the house. Everyone in attendance had to remember last year's match against these two teams. That's when Highland's long winning streak came to an end by the Irish. Camden Catholic continued their winning streak against Highland and held off 31-29.

Shawnee's girls' basketball team defeated Highland in an Olympic Conference game. The Renegades went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter to pull away for good for a 44-31 win at Highland High School. The Lady Tartans would play Shawnee tough for 3 of the 4 quarters but could not overcome an 11-point deficit in the third quarter.

High School Ice Hockey: Friday, January 30th
By Gregg Williams If you're tired of the clutching and holding of the NHL, come out and watch end to end play, big hits, great saves, great plays, fast skating, and players who give it their all on every shift. It is the South Jersey High School Hockey League. On Friday, January 30th the Cherry Hill East Cougars (SJHSIHL Tier I) and the Edgewood Eagles (SJHSIHL Tier II) faced off at Hollydell Ice Center in a very exciting game that left no one a loser. Some of the eager fans, like Mrs. Anita Bullock and Mr. Douglas Roemer, said the 7-7 tie was truly entertaining.
The game looked gloomy for Edgewood, with only eight skaters and one goalie (recovering from the flu) able to play that night. Of the eight players, one player only had a single hockey glove to wear. Cherry Hill's prospects didn't look terrific either, with two players sitting out for 12 and 14 minutes each. This was a carryover from an incident in their last game.

Cherry Hill East's defense was the key to their 32-16 victory over Pennsauken. The Cougars would start out with the traditional 2-3 defense and then switched to the 1-3-1 man press to stifle any Pennsauken inside game. Jeff Pela would score all the points for his team in the first half to take a 9-6 lead. Scott Plasky and Marcus Bullock would set up screens inside the paint to free up Pela.

If the way the first 6 points were scored was an indication of how the rest of the game would be, then this had all the implications of a very high offensive scoring game. Pemberton went to work right off of the opening tip with a 3 pointer. But Lenape would respond with a 3 pointer of their own. All of this would happen within the first 10 seconds of the game. To slow things down, the Hornets would apply a full court press right after their basket and surprise the Lenape Indians. This defense would result in 8 of their 19 first quarter points off of the press. Guards Willie William and Jurron Kelly were very aggressive to force over turnovers.

Washington Township Ice Hockey Club:
By Gregg Williams December began with a sound 8-3 victory over Lenape. Gray Shaneberger led the way with a Hat Trick and 1 assist. Goalies Mark Zlatkin and Brian Migliorisi combined to make 20 saves as the Varsity kept Lenape pinned in their own zone most of the evening. Other offensive starts for Township were Nick Gariffo (2 goals, 1 assist), and James Christian and Jeff Slotnick with a goal each. In the much anticipated rematch with Eastern, it was Township who desperately needed a win to stay in the hunt for the South Jersey Crown. Eastern handed Varsity its only loss in South Jersey this year.
Senior Mark Zlatkin started in goal and the Migali's (Bruno from Ernie) gave Township an early first period goal. But Eastern scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. Early in the second, with a delayed penalty on, Jeff Slotnick jumped off the bench to pop one in and tie it. Sophomore blue-liner Chris Harrington scored a power play goal to five Township the lead only to see Eastern tie it with a power play goal of their own.
