South Jersey Softball: Saturday, June 25, 1999
By Gary Steiner Stratford traveled to Waterford Twp. to open their best-of-three SJGSA playoff series Friday night. Good pitching from both teams kept the score close. A three-run 3rd inning would clinch it for Waterford, allowing them to pull away with the 5-3 victory. The lead would change a couple times in this low scoring game. Waterford would score one run in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead off of singles from Longino and Malady. Stratford would counter with singles from Sexton and Baumann in the second inning to tie the score at one. But a double from Unghire in the bottom of the inning would put Waterford back on top, 2-1. In the third inning, Stratford would score two runs and pull ahead 3-2 off of singles by Sexton and Burke. Then Waterford pulled ahead for good in the bottom of the third by scoring three runs, this time with singles by Duckett, Nelson, Hickman, and Malady. Longino would shut down Startford's bats for the rest of the game, preserving the 5-3 win. The two teams will meet again for game two of this series on Sunday. Click here for additional photos.
