South Jersey Modified League: Wednesday, September 2, 1998
By Art Redd
The South Jersey Modified League has crowned a team that has shown many ways to capture a title. This team has used speed, aggressiveness and pitching to take home the championship trophy. The Silver won their third consecutive SJML Title with a 13-2 victory over Metal Plex at Runnemede Beaver Branch Park, winning the series three games to one. The number one ranked team in the 1998 playoffs got to the finals by defeating ATL and Nipper's Nuts. Metal Plex was impressive by defeating Jay's Elbow Room and MHC Thunder. However, the Silver was not finished capturing titles.

By Pam Gargano This year, the Edgewood softball team has improved tremendously from last season.
Led by captains Megan Henhaffer, Mandie Walker, and Michael-Lin Tronco, the girls were a lot more competitive. Winning only one game last year, they managed to turn around and win 4 this year with a very young team.

By Nick Straguzzi What pops into your head when someone mentions "men's softball"? Huge guys taking massive swings at lob balls? Final scores that resemble football games? A keg of beer on each bench? And if that someone then says, "no, fastpitch softball", do you think of high school girls in ponytails?
If you were in the vicinity of Laurel Springs Park on Saturday June 13th, you'd best keep those thoughts to yourself. The top men's fastpitch players of the area took the field around 7:30 PM for the 20th annual All-Star Game of the South Jersey Modified Fastpitch League (SJML). It's the culmination of an evening's worth of events that honors not only a league, but a tradition.

High School Softball (Group 4 Finals): Saturday, June 6, 1998
By Crystal Parker
This game featured the Clifton Mustangs who had not been defeated over the past two seasons. Most people predicted a Clifton versus Toms River North championship game. But the Chiefs had something to say about that. Cherokee got past Toms River and a very good Hunterdon Central team to get to the finals. But they just could not get that last victory to claim the title. The Mustangs would bat around plus one in the fourth inning to pull ahead 6-0 and shutout the Chiefs 8-0 at Toms River North High School. With the victory, the Mustangs would add one more win to their 63 consecutive win streak.

High School Softball (Group 2 Finals): Saturday, June 6, 1998
By Art Redd
After all the games they have played during the regular season and the playoffs, it came down to two teams. The Kingsway Dragons and Mahwah Thunderbirds knew what was at stake when they travelled to Toms River North High School. Both teams were trying to capture their first state title. Each team had to win five consecutive playoff games to get to the NJSIAA finals. The Dragons would get that title by jumping out to an early lead and capture the State Group 2 championship by defeating the Thunderbirds 4-0. Wendi Miller would keep the Mahwah batters off balance with her pitching and strike out 14 batters.

Just imagine walking up into the batter's box and preparing yourself to face a pitcher who has thrown all of her pitches over the plate with high velocity. Each one thrown would be called a strike by the umpire. So you dig your cleats into the dirt and prepare yourself for a duel with this pitcher. Well that's what Cherokee and Cherry Hill West batters were ready to do. As the game started, both teams would see nothing but strikes from Cherokee's MariEllen Singley and West's Jamie Elias. But it would be the Chiefs who would open up the scoring and beat West 12-0 at Cherry Hill.

Bishop Eustace is considered to be one of the best softball teams in South Jersey and predicted to win the Olympic National Division again this year. Coach Mike Sacca would put his defending Group B state champions up against a very tough Padua Academy team from Wilmington, Delaware. This would turn out to be a classic pitching dual between Eustace's Megan Johnston and Padua's Julianne Lovejoy. Both pitchers had control of their game and kept most batters off the bases. The scoreless game continued until the bottom of the sixth inning where Eustace plated the winning run.

You couldn't have scripted a better day to hold the 3rd Annual Coed Charity Classic to benefit Special Olympics. With mostly sunny skies and temperature in the upper 70's, eight teams participated in a one-pitch softball tournament. Cheers, Computer Sciences Corporation, Gary's, Jay's Moorestown, Jay's Mt. Laurel, Myers Landscaping & Irrigation, RAM and Tyco joined together at Jeff Young Fields and Laurel Acres Park to enjoy softball for a good cause.
