Philadelphia Charge forward Marinette Pichon was named the Women's United Soccer Association Player of the Month for June by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association on Wednesday. Pichon garnered seven first-place votes and six second-place tallies for a total of 20 points, outdistancing second-place finisher Birgit Prinz of Carolina by five points.
Pichon had six goals in five games during June, missing one game due to French national team duties. She had two two-goal games during the month and currently sits atop the league with nine goals for the season. Her 19 points is best on the team and is good enough for third in the WUSA.
Philadelphia went 3-0-2 with Pichon on the field in June, posting a 3-0-3 mark overall. She has scored eight of the last 11 goals for the team and is making a push for league MVP.
The award marks the second straight month a member of the Charge has garnered the honor. Charge midfielder Kelly Smith took home the award in May, just before going down for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Pichon finished second in the voting for May's award.
Charge goalkeeper Melissa Moore also received some recognition for the award this month. Moore, who tallied two points in the voting, posted a 3-0-3 in the month, allowing only four goals in six games with two shutouts. She made a franchise-best 10 saves in a 3-1 win over Carolina on 6/19 and followed that up with a seven-save night in a 1-1 tie versus San Diego on 6/23.
The Charge take the field again this Sunday, July 7 when they host the New York Power starting at 7 p.m. at Villanova Stadium. The Powerpuff Girls will be at the game and to order your special ticket package that includes a private pre-game Meet & Greet and tickets to the Powerpuff Girls Movie call 215-467-GOAL.
