South Jersey Soccer: Saturday, July 3, 1999
By Forrest Robleto The South Jersey Barons had lost to the New Jersey Stallions twice this year, but since their last meeting they have been going in opposite directions, with the Barons moving to a race for first place and the Stallions steadily dropping. Matt Miles scored 4 goals and Paul Royal recorded a shutout to avenge the two shutouts the Stallions handed to the Barons earlier this year. Matt Miles got a perfect cross from Matt Brooks and slammed it home at the 18-minute mark. The game up to that point was very even with very scoring opportunities for either team. The game continued very evenly and very physically through the end of the first half. At the 74 minute mark Eric Chijioke did a masterful job of bringing the ball up and gave it over to Bob DiMeo who made a pretty pass to Matt Miles who sent it home. Matt's second goal of the evening didn't seem like a lot of insurance at the time and the Stallions' Keeper Emmett Idzahl looked strong. With seven minutes left in the game Miles picked up the ball about midfield and put on a burst of speed. He found his way in close and scored to the immense delight of the 681 fans in attendance. The Barons announced that in any game that the Barons score seven goals every fan in attendance receives a quarter pound of fudge from Seventh Heaven Fudge. So when Matt scored his fourth goal of the evening three minutes later the Fans all began chanting "We want fudge, We want fudge." Matt Miles said after the game that, "It's funny, I was supposed to be subbed off, they made a mistake at the table when they took Brooks out and I got the shot to play up front. .... I think it was still one-nothing, you know there were two Matts on the field and I think they took the wrong one out. But anybody can do the job, if Brooksy's up top he probably would have done the same thing." The Barons are generally a fan friendly organization and when they win an exciting game like this one they're fan pleasing too. The Stallions were out shot 15-12 as Paul Royal recorded his second shutout of the year. The Barons' next game is Saturday, July 10, home at Carey Stadium against the Central Jersey Riptide at 6:00 PM. Photos by Forrest Robleto
