South Jersey Soccer: Saturday, May 8, 1999
By Boog Williams On Saturday May 8th, the Berlin Township girl's soccer team (in purple and black) played visiting Upper Township (in green) at the Luke Avenue sports complex in Berlin Township. It was the first hot, windy, sunny day of the soccer season and it took its toll on the players. Berlin Township held on to win the game 3 to 2. In the first half, Upper Township scored first with the wind. Near the end of the first half, Berlin Township scored two goals. The first goal was scored by center forward Nikki Vellucci and the second by left winger Colleen Bryson. Both teams were very tired by the end of the half and consumed a lot of water at the break. In the second half, with the wind, Berlin Township dominated the beginning of the half. Nikki Vellucci scored her second goal of the game. This goal stood as the game winner for Berlin Township. After the 3rd goal, Upper Township started to put the pressure on Berlin Township as the players tired in the hot sun. Berlin Township goalie Jaime Dickerson made some great saves and the defense for Berlin Township, led by sweeper Stephanie Conn, held back the pressure by Upper Township. Upper Township scored to make it a close game at 3 to 2, but Berlin Township came away with the win. Click here for a short video clip of the action.
