The Berlin Township Hurricanes defeated the Maple Shade Breeze 4-1 in a U-10 South Jersey Girl's soccer match. On a warm October day, M. Sparks turned up the fire on the Breeze as she scored a hat trick and assisted on the other goal for the Hurricanes, as the Berlin Township defense stopped the Breeze.
Sparks started the scoring by taking a pass from B. Gadzia and dribbled down the middle of the field. From inside the left side of the 14-yard box, she rocketed a shot to the near post and into the back of the net. The Breeze's M. Selneck kept on attacking, but the defense of the Hurricanes, led by T. Beaver, B. Gadzia, M. Williams and A. Taggart stopped the Breeze in their tracks. When the ball got behind the defense, keepers S. Wahl made the saves in the first half and B. Wash in the second. The Hurricanes had a couple of other scoring chances in the first half by B. Wash, K. Ford, A. Perri, and J. Curcio, but were stopped by the Breeze defender R. Murtin.
The second goal of the game came on a corner kick. Sparks took the kick and hit a ball that made its way to the far post where A. Taggart was waiting to put the ball into the open net. The half ended 2-0.
In the second half, Sparks and Gadzia were all over the Breeze. The next goal was scored on a scramble in front of the net and Sparks kicked it in. Sparks scored the next goal to give the Hurricanes a 4-0 lead. The Breeze did score late in the game to make the score 4-1. The win now give the Hurricanes a 2-1-2 record for the year.
