1997 Women's Coaches Tournament Finals:
By Art Redd
The meeting between the Cherry Hill East Cougars (15-5) and the Delran Bears (17-3-2) was held at Washington Township High School under the lights. This would be the first of two games playing in the South Jersey Coaches Tournament Finals. The men's match between the Cherry Hill East against Cherry Hill West would follow. But this women's match would rely on two good goalkeepers, Betsy Kennedy (Bears) and Carolyn Synder (Cougars), to take home the title. It was Synder and her team that would prevail. Synder came up big in the new overtime shootout format to obtain the victory against Eastern to get into the finals.

High School Boys Soccer:
By Scot Williams The Cherry Hill West Lions continued their tournament shutout streak and defeated No. 2 ranked Cherry Hill East Cougars 2-0 to capture the 1997 Coaches Tournament Championship. This was the third time in the tournament's history that Cherry Hill West has won the title. The previous two titles were in 1976 and 1986.
The Lions' road to the finals included strong defensive wins over
Moorestown (2-0), Shawnee (1-0) and West Deptford (1-0). Saturday night's
final match was no different.

High School Boys Soccer:
By Art Redd Eastern was coming off of a tough victory in the overtime quarterfinals game on Friday. Coach Pete DeFeo knew that this game would not be easy. Knowing that defeating last year's Group 4 Champions was now in the past, his team had to continue with pressuring the Renegades defense.
Shawnee was the team the kept pressure on the Vikings keeper Doug Kellogg all game. Each shot on goal was denied by Kellogg...except two.

High School Boys Soccer:
By Art Redd As this Group 4 Semi-finals Soccer match between the Eastern Vikings and Lenape Indians began, each team not only had to battle each other, but also the high winds and cold temperature. Lenape had their fans behind them even though they were wrapped up tight.
Eastern scored the first goal of the game by Hakim Fobia, which got past Lenape's keeper Matt Rotkowitz. Fobia took charge at midfield and put the Vikings up 1-0 with 27:50 left in the first half.

High School Action:
By Mat Gahan Edgewood 3 Eastern 2 Friday 9/19/97
You could not have asked for a better start for the 1997 season for all sports. With the outstanding weather conditions, athletes have had the chance to concentrate on one thing - the quality of their game. On September 19, there was no finer showing than the Olympic Conference showdown between Eastern and Edgewood High Schools.

High School Ladies Soccer:
By Art Redd With Cherry Hill West (1-8-0) visiting Camden Catholic (0-10-0), both these teams were determined to get an early lead and use their defense to hold on to the victory.
Each team defended their end well and goal tenders Andrea Howey (Irish) and Kell Czaika had very good games in the net.

High School Soccer:
By Alec Walker Edgewood came out strong in the first half on Thursday, but fell short in the second half. The scoring led off with a goal by Brian Gambone at 5:32, followed by two goals by Greg Ruttler.
With the score at the half in favor of Edgewood 3 goals to 1, Edgewood looked to be on the road to their fifth win.

High School Soccer:
By Sean Keegan After a preseason ranking of 16th in South Jersey, the Edgewood Eagles took off. They breezed through the first week, and half of their schedule, defeating previously #4 Eastern, Pitman, Gloucester Tech, and Oakcrest along the way.
So as these proud Eagles marched into school on Monday, with newspapers under their arms reading "Edgewood #6 in South Jersey", they were anxious to benefit from their undefeated status. They left school Monday and traveled to Camden Catholic, confident that their perfect record would not tarnish.

Athlete Spotlight:
By Bob Grimmie Like many High School seniors, the future is full of uncertainties for Edgewood's Greg Ruttler. His collegiate destination is undetermined, his intended major at this mystery school is unknown and his career goals are, at best, an after thought. Very normal for a 17-year-old young man, very ordinary.
However, it is Ruttler's extraordinary ability to blast a soccer ball past the outstretched arms of an opposing goalie that will provide the answer to many of his senior year questions. |

Team Profile:
By James Vacca The Bishop Eustace women's soccer team is looking forward to their upcoming season. Head coach Mike Otto has a powerful team led by sweeper Jen Karpovich, an All-South Jersey First Team and All-Group II State selection, and returning captains Meredith Bigham, Jamie Potts, Kristin Succo, and Jackie Mestichelli. Although Bishop Eustace is a smaller school, they have four players who have been named to the All-Conference team and two All-South Jersey Team selections. This talent accompanied with new key players such as Marina Capacasa, Elizabeth Tomlin, and Jackie Richards should give Eustace the winning edge.
|
Team Profile:
By James Vacca Head coach Bruce Wilson is expecting nothing but good fortune this soccer season. His Cherokee team is being led by senior John Farese who was a First Team Olympic Conference selection last year. In the first five games John has three goals and eight assists, which has moved him closer to breaking his brother's 1992 Cherokee 22 single season goal record. John has also made some impressive records of his own; he is Cherokee's all time goal scorer with 42 goals so far. Coach Wilson also has returning seniors Steve Jenks and Mike Nelson to throw at the competition. All this fire power should help to make Cherokee a power house in the 1997 season.

Ladies Soccer Preview:
By Bob Grimmie Last season the Edgewood High School girl's soccer team finished 0-18 in what was clearly a transition year. The year prior to that they graduated 12 seniors. Then head coach Aaron Rose lost his three most experienced players to other sports, ineligibility and injury. The result was an inexperienced team that was forced to learn as they lost.
"We were really inexperienced in terms of girls who've even played varsity," said Rose. "We weren't as bad as our record shows, we just didn't get any so called easy games."

Men's Soccer Preview:
By Bob Grimmie Last season, Edgewood High School's men's soccer coach Ron Wence guided a young team to an 8-8-0 regular season record, good enough to earn the 14th seed in the state tournament.
Once there the Eagles upset the tournament's third seed, Toms River East, with a 1-0 overtime victory in the first round. Lenape, the tournaments eventual champion, ended their brief run in the second round by beating the would be Cinderella team 4-0.
