For the third year in a row the South Jersey Wings of Steel played an exhibition game against a group of Referees from the SJHSIHL and the Wings once again prevailed 4-1. Goals by Ray Beck, Mike Wilson and Athen Blaine surrounded by the first goal scored by the refs in three years had the Wings in control late into the third period. Solid goaltending by Danny Wheeler and good offensive pressure were the keys to the Wings victory with Team Mom Jessica Shaw leading the way. Mike Molino scored the lone goal for the refs, who were led by Bullet Bob Teti along with Troy and Bob Mansilla, Tim Holz, John Karcher, Nick Karker, Chris Ricciardi, Chucky Maadara, Lou Rucci and Steve Magaldi in nets. On ice officials were Pat Durkin and Wayne Gibb.
The refs were coached by Norman Jones, who is also the assistant coach of the Wings. Attendance was up slightly, but the generosity of everyone was awesome. Money donated and raised from the 50/50 along with the basket of cheer will go directly to the Wings organization. With the game in hand and the clock winding down, newcomer Michael Costantino-Mauger was alone in front of the net and once he got control of the puck his shot eluded Magaldi and Michael had his first goal as a Wing. Being able to see Mike come back with his arms extended and a smile on his face as he steered his sled back to the bench, puck on his lap that was… priceless.
Notes: Former Timber Creek legend Gary Scott Sr. once again spearheaded this event and has pledged to continue this annually. Gary is a class act and we need more guys like him in youth hockey.
