Jake Bergey scored on the Wings first possession in overtime to defeat the Washington Power 14-13 in a game played in front of 16,779 rabid fans at the First Union Center. The Philadelphia Wings scored two goals in the last ninety seconds to send the game into overtime. Tom Marachek led the Wings attack with four goals and Bergey notched a hat trick. The Power's Jesse Hubbard had three goals while Paul and Gary Gait added two goals apiece.
The first half was a contrast in styles as the first period was tight and rugged with each team scoring two goals. The second period was wide open and chippy with each team scoring seven goals. The Power capitalized on the power play netting five goals with the man advantage. But for each one of those goals, the Wings had an answer. While the first half was a fans dream that included lots of offense and a few fights, the second half was more of a struggle. The Power tightened up their defense and limited the Wings to just two goals in the third quarter. The Power scored four of their own and led 13-11 going into the fourth quarter.
Washington seemed to be content and sit on their lead. Well that strategy worked up until the last two minutes of the game. With the empty net giving the Wings an extra man, they pulled to within 13-12 as Marachek smoked a shot by Dalep. After gaining control with just less than thirty seconds remaining, the Wings called a time out. Dallas was pulled again and got the equalizer came from Jeff Ratcliffe with just eleven seconds left. That set the stage for Bergey's heroics.
