Flyers Re-sign Brian Boucher
Thursday, August 31, 2000
PRESS RELEASE
Flyers President and General Manager Bob Clarke to meet with media today at Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees at 4:30 PM. The Philadelphia Flyers today re-signed goaltender Brian Boucher to a two-year contract, announced President and General Manager Bob Clarke. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Brian played such a big role in the success we had in the second half of the season and in the playoffs, that he's obviously very important to us," said Clarke. "With his age and his relative inexperience, he couldn't afford to miss training camp so it's nice to get the contract done."
Added Boucher, "I'm excited. Now that the contract is done, I'm relieved and happy. I look forward to being with my teammates and getting started with the season. You get antsy around this time of year to get back in the swing of things. Now that this is behind me, we can move on and hopefully improve on last season."
Boucher, 23, registered a 20-10-3 record, an NHL-best 1.91 goals against average, and a team-high four shutouts in 35 regular season games last season. He ranked fourth in the NHL and led all rookies in save percentage (.918). Boucher, who was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team, became the first rookie goaltender since the 1950-51 season to play at least 25 games and have a GAA under 2.00.
During the playoffs, the 6-2, 180-pounder won 11 games while backstopping the Flyers to the Eastern Conference Finals. During the Flyers 2-1, five overtime win at Pittsburgh on May 4, Boucher stopped 57 of 58 shots while playing 151 minutes and 48 seconds, including 149:26 of shutout hockey.
The native of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, was originally drafted by the Flyers in the first round (22nd overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.
