Ice Hockey Spotlight: Davis Drops Sound Tigers Philadelphia Leaves Connecticut With 4-1 Win Wednesday, February 21, 2007 By Brian Smith BRIDGEPORT, CONN. - A career night for Matt Davis helped the Philadelphia Phantoms take a 4-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Wednesday night, snapping the home team's nine-game winning streak at The Arena at Harbor Yard. Davis scored twice and had an assist for a three-point night as the Phantoms won for the third time in their last four games. Philadelphia opened the scoring late in the first period with its second shorthanded goal in as many games. Davis was carrying the puck down the right side on a two-on-one and entered the right circle just as defensive pressure let up. He took the opportunity to snap a shot high to the glove side of goaltender Wade Dubielewicz for the 1-0 lead with 1:44 remaining in the frame. With about an equal amount of time gone in the second period, John Slaney made it a two-goal lead. Slaney fired a shot that Dubielewicz stopped, but he picked up his own rebound and backhanded it home 1:31 into the period. Three seconds before the game's halfway point, the lead grew to three goals. Davis centered a puck from the right side to Pete Zingoni in front, who redirected it past Dubielewicz at 9:57 to make it 3-0. Tomas Malec put the Sound Tigers on the board at 16:53 of the period. He had the puck high in the left circle and fired it through traffic, sending it past Scott Munroe and making it a 3-1 game. But Philadelphia got the goal back before the intermission, picking up the second goal from Davis at 18:48. Matt Ellison was residing in the slot and slid a pass to Davis on the left side. He fired it past a diving Dubielewicz to give his club a 4-1 lead and close out the scoring. Munroe took the win with 29 saves on 30 shots, while Dubielewicz absorbed the loss after stopping 32 of 36 Phantoms opportunities. The Phantoms return to the Wachovia Spectrum on Friday for Teddy Bear Toss Night when they host the Hershey Bears at 7:05. The Phantoms will also be wearing special retro jerseys for the evening, which will be auctioned off following the contest.
