High School Ice Hockey: Friday, April 14, 2000
By Mike Costantino Gloucester County defeated Camden County 13-7 in the final of the first SJHSIHL All-Star Tournament. With the win, Gloucester County has bragging rights until next season as the home of the area's best high school hockey players. Coached by Pat Sullivan, whose Clearview team won their first title this year, the team was led by tournament MVP Gunnar Fox with two goals and three assists. Buddy Anderson joined in with a hat trick. Sterling's Steve Marshall led the Camden County attack with four goals and two assists. The tournament was put together hastily and with players having other obligations to different leagues, class trips and proms, participation was sporadic. Our understanding is the tournament will be played in December next season, serving somewhat as the midway point for the regular season. As for the game, as with most all-star games, there was not much defense but plenty of offense. Pat Sullivan opened the scoring for Gloucester as they never trailed and after four minutes it was 1-0. Marshall tied the game at 1-1, but Gloucester responded with goals by John Meenan and two by Doug Dehart, to take a 4-1 lead. John Scheelenhammer and Vince Galasso cut the led to 4-3 only to see Gloucester score the next seven goals. Joe Gori, Fox, Sullivan, Pelle, Fox again and Anderson made it 10-3. Two goals by Marshall and one by Schellenhammer made it 10-6, but Rob Coble and two goals by Anderson silenced Camden County and Gloucester won easily 13-7. Photos by Boog Williams
