High School Ice Hockey: Tuesday, February 22, 2000
By Jack Anderson It will be an All Gloucester County Championship Final Series as the top two teams in the regular season will face off for the South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League title. Washington Township, who posted an undefeated 12-0-2 record in the regular season, will meet Clearview, whose regular season record is 12-1-1. These two teams played back to back games in mid February, with the first ending in a tie, and the second a 3-2 Township win. Both teams have a potent offensive attack. Townships Joe Gori led the league in scoring but Clearview's Patrick Sullivan was only one point off the pace. Each team has solid defensive anchors with Township's Buddy Anderson and Clearview's Mike Gooch placing among the leagues leading scorers as well. Leadership and hard hitting will come from Clearview Captain John Meenan as well as Township Captain Derek Poletis. It may just come down to goaltending. Clearview's Jared Weisenbach led the league in save percentage, while Township's tandem of Derek Lucas and Kevin Ciccone combined for under 2 goals allowed per game. Game One of the best of three series will be held at the Hollydell Ice Arena in Sewell, on Friday, February 25, at 9:00 pm. An award ceremony will take place before the game. Admission is just $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students. Children under 12 are free. Game Two will also be at Hollydell on Thursday, March 2, at 7:45 pm. Game Three if necessary is scheduled for Friday, March 10, at 7:30 pm, also at Hollydell.
