The Irish from Camden Catholic has dominated the sport of field hockey for the past three years. Winning two straight sectional titles is something that the Irish has gotten use to and were looking to add a third. Well the fifth seeded Lady Eagles from West Deptford had other plans as they had knocked off the top seeded team on Thursday and looking for more. Overcoming an early deficit, West Deptford score the next three goals to hold on for a 3-2 victory claiming the South Jersey Group II title.
This was a repeat of last year’s title game with that game being decided in overtime. The Lady Eagles held a one-goal lead until late in the second half when Camden Catholic scored once near the end of regulation and then the deciding goal in overtime. This year could have been the same as West Deptford held on to a one-goal lead late in the game. The difference would be the defense and keeper Meghan Rieger.
The Irish would get the game’s initial goal when Lauren Brady scored. Tiffany Hunter’s goal later in the first half tied the game when she received a perfect pass from Brittany Gibbs. At the 25:34 mark of the second half, this time Gibbs was on the receiving end of a Hunter pass. Her goal broke the one all tie and were not satisfied with it. Hunter would score her second goal of the game giving West Deptford a two-goal lead. Camden Catholic would get one of those goals back when Kelly Simpson scored. From that point on it was all Rieger and the Lady Eagles’ defense.
